AUSTRALIA should aim for a population of 50 million through "significant migration", says Queensland Premier Peter Beattie.
Addressing a business luncheon at the Brisbane Club today, Mr Beattie said the current ageing population of 21 million was too small to meet future needs.
"In terms of the general issue of migration - I know there are pressures on, and all that stuff, in terms of the environment - I think 21 million Australians is not enough," he said...
"It is a matter for my federal colleagues, not for me, but I am one of those people who believe that inevitably Australia's population long term should be settling in around about 50 million."...

29 million immigrants will also have ‘future needs’. The problem is not the population, its the govenments too-tight strangle hold on the economy
Perhaps the Queensland premier should grant full citizenship to all its cane toads — that should bump up the population count past 50 million.
That is cultural and probably literal suicide.

The biggest hurdle is water, followed by power. We would need to have desalination plants powered by nuclear reactors.
Beattie opposes both nuclear power and desalination so he's in favour of increasing the problems but opposes the solutions.

There's actually a fair bit of boinking with results down here since we're having something of a baby boom. All we really need to do is reduce the abortion rate.

How about a novel approach... give tax breaks to couples who remain married and have more children...
Australia is constantly relaxing the immigration rules for Brits. Soon they’ll be paying my countrymen to emigrate to Oz!

Ah, a baby boom! Good news! Too many western nations are losing their sustainable population and being overrun by immigrants. Keep it “up” Aussies.
There are probably thousands in Glascow that would move to Australia.
Why can’t they make their own Australians? Do they have to outsource everything?
