Because he thinks Republicans are stupid, I suspect.
He was running as a Republican in MA, he dove to the middle to appeal to as many voters as he could. The middle in MA is the solid left here in Indiana, his speech would have been very different given in the Midwest instead of the east coast if he was running there.
