That would be great for upper elementary or middle school. But how about letting younger kids relax, and PLAY with no grades or forcing them into an activity? We tended to come up with things on our own but if we wanted to just look at the sky and dream, that was okay, too. Why does every little moment have to be structured?

Those children that truly have peanut allergies typically have severe reactions- much more severe than your hayfever allergies. Anaphylactic shock is not something any teacher, or child, should have to deal with. Children with peanut allergies know what they have to avoid and usually carry (or deposit with the school nurse) an epi-pen. Your putting quotations around the term “allergic” is deameaning and belittling to something that these poor children have to go through. Do you do the same for diabetic children? Those that are retarded?

Where did you see anything other than the word “ban” in the article...

Cupcakes have been banned...

What I dont want is ONE mom dictating her wants over the other 29 parents...

That is the very definition of liberalitus...

You dont want your kids to have cupcakes....therefore NO children shall have cupcakes...

Yes..I have kids in school...

I am a diabetic. I do not ask for nor do I receive special treatment. I do not request that the people around me or in shared classes forgo their lifestyles for my "benefit". I learned at an early age exactly what my limitations are and this was done without the assistance or interference of local government.

Sorry, I should have included the other research I did on this....

“But principal Danny Teevens said the cupcake ban has been the difficult to swallow - for students as well as parents, who traditionally treat the whole class to frosted delights on their children’s birthdays. “

Note, “the whole class”

from here
http://www.bakersfield.com/119/story/227636.html

And I love this princpal for this simple quote...
“I’m going to get some headaches over some of this,” Teevens said. “Some parents will come in and whine. But quite honestly, we’re here to educate kids, not to throw birthday parties”

It’s not a ban on cupcakes, it’s a ban on unhealthy treats to the whole class. I lived that crap and I appreciate what they are trying to do. School should not be a constant party.

Difference is, if someone opens a hostess cupcake beside your head and sugar particles become airborne, you aren’t going to go into diabetic coma. A child with real peanut allergies can go into shock just from the dust that comes off peanuts.

As I said before, the “peanut police” can be really intrusive, but please don’t downplay or belittle a child’s life threatening situation just because you personally feel the government shouldn’t interfere with your life- even to protect the innocent.

Ok...lets just ban peanuts altogether, afterall, it's for the children.

“Huh? When I was a kid in the 60s we had standardized tests every year in elementary school. They were called the “Iowas” or something like that (this was in in NY state). We also had standardized state tests called the “Regents” for all our high school classes.”

I can absolutely guarantee you didn’t have the number of standardized tests kids have now. My son HAD to take three sets of them this past year, including ones for courses he aced the year before. This crap is now required under NCLB and the state standards of learning.

Also, in the 60s your school didn’t face being taken over and its teachers fired if students didn’t reach some arbitrary goal mandated by Congress, the president and some faceless bureaucrat in Washington. I’m not saying educators shouldn’t be accountable, but one-size-fits-all tests do not make for better students or better teachers. I’d argue that teachers and a large percentage of students are worse for it.

What are you talking about? A little anaphylactic shock is a real character builder for any kid. I think any child with severe allergies should be exposed at school. It’s good for them. /s

As a diabetic I find that small portions of peanut butter helps control my blood sugar better than any other type of protein. Am I to risk a diabetic coma because someone has a food allergy? Why not carry the nonsense further? Lets get the EPA involved, maybe OSHA, even a lawsuit or two under the guise of ADA? Why should we allow the allergy of one person dictate the eating habits of an entire school?

Lucky I went to school before the diet police arrived. :-)

When we went to school, they actually had GYM class! In elementary school! What a concept!

Modest neighborhood, the school also had a separate cafeteria, auditorium and gym. I only remember two fat kids. That was the era when most kids had stay-at-home moms and kids could actually PLAY OUTSIDE and milk cartons didn't advertise missing children.

And video games didn't suck the brains out of bored and pudgy kiddles.

Yes..you would love the dismissive attitude of an authoritarian who could obviously care less about how the parents or children actually FEEL...

It’s for their own good....

Yes...we’ve heard that before...

I lived that crap and I appreciate what they are trying to do. School should not be a constant party.

No...school should appearantly be a gulag...

I notice you didnt include this quote:

“Parent Yvette Vasquez supports healthy food - but acknowledged that her 7-year-old son was sad when he didn’t bring treats for his classmates on his birthday last month.

“He thought it was the worst birthday ever,” Vasquez said.”

How proud one must be to piss on the simple pleasure of SHARING stuff with your classmates...

EEK!...the evil cupcake!

And you didnt include this either:

“Fearing a broader cupcake clampdown, the Texas Legislature passed a so-called Safe Cupcake Amendment in 2005, giving parents the right to send treats to class. Politicians passed the law after a school banned a father from delivering birthday pizzas to his child’s class.”

GOD LOVE TEXAS!!!!!!

I elect my legislators to deal with problems of my state, not appease whiny parents.

I guess that Texas/Mexico border problem just disappeared because the “Safe Cupcake Ammendment” passed.

I pay my school district to educate children, not host parties. That’s the parent’s job.

I can’t recall ever having birthday celebrations with shared treats in class when I was in public school, and I can’t see the need for it, either. If I wanted to share treats with my classmates and/or friends, my parents threw a birthday party, on our own time. Treats in school were limited to planned parties at school, usually around some holiday, like Christmas, Easter, maybe Valentine’s day - that sort of thing.

For me, in fact, it was a big kick to have $.10 to take to school when I was in the lower grades so that I could get a carton of “Beep!” orange drink from the milkman to have at recess. No, we weren’t poor, nor was this a thousand years ago (about 30, in fact) - parents just didn’t generally feed kids near the amound of junk that they do today.

“I elect my legislators to deal with problems of my state, not appease whiny parents.”

See,you ARE a liberal...you cant even accept that OTHER parents have rights...

“I guess that Texas/Mexico border problem just disappeared because the “Safe Cupcake Ammendment” passed.”

Strawman....the issue is clearly cupcakes...and the banning of such...appearently...over the wishes of the majority of parents...and the kids...

And by the same token...I’m glad that school administrators have so much free time on their hands they can dictate the dietary needs of children instead of their educational needs...

“I pay my school district to educate children, not host parties. That’s the parent’s job.”

I DONT pay my school district to be the frickin food police...THAT is the parents job.

Face it...a grinch...who stole childhood...

It is precisly the attitude you exibit that permits school districts to run roughshod over tradidtional childhood activities...like playing tag in a school yard...or dodgeball...or holloween parades...or christmass pagents...

Simply because your ox isnt getting gored at the moment...you could care less...

Well, that horse your on is pretty high, my FRiend.

First you state that all cupcakes are banned and then when I nicely state that I was going on more information and provide it, you continue with your “Food Police” abstract, yelling that one Mother made this rule when the principal who is doing his job, educating and not entertaining kids, put it into effect. Parents are paying for a product, they are not delivering. Sorry that some parents want to have their birthday party at the Public School instead of Chuckie Cheese. Common sense is reigning in this school. Sucks for them, but the kids win in the long run. They will go back to partying three times a year and learning all school year long.

When you stop calling people “liberals” asking if they attended “madrassas” or go back on your meds we can have a conversation.

And the word is apparently not “appearently”. Public School was very good to you. Maybe it was too many cupcakes.

“Well, that horse your on is pretty high,”

Actually....it’s a huge ass....often confused for a high horse...

“my FRiend.”

Yeah...right....like when someone from new york calls you “pal”

Just as genuine...

“First you state that all cupcakes are banned”

No..the ARTICLE you referenced DOES....along with other “unhealthy” foods...what ever that means...

“and then when I nicely state that I was going on more information and provide it,”

Correction....smugly...your posting is riddled with the air of superiority...I may not spell so good..but I know when I’m being talked down to...

“you continue with your “Food Police” abstract,”

Correction...a clear and direct comparison...what are they doing ..if not policing food?

“yelling that one Mother made this rule when the principal who is doing his job,”

I didnt yell...I’m using text...there is no sound to text unless you are using a speech program...and if your computer is yelling at you...you should log off...

The other point here is:

Who died and made the principle the dietary expert?

Is dictating nutritional requirements now part of the job title?

“educating and not entertaining kids, put it into effect.”

There is no education without entertainment concerning 7 year olds...

“Parents are paying for a product, they are not delivering.”

Gee...you just noticed?

Parent aren't paying for a product...they are paying taxes....what the state chooses to produce through the inefficient use of those taxes is often beyond the control of the parent...

“Sorry that some parents want to have their birthday party at the Public School instead of Chuckie Cheese.”

I doubt it...I sense a hint of glee...

“Common sense is reigning in this school.”

Common sence??...common sense was passed three stops ago and this is well into the land of ubsurdity..

“Sucks for them,”

This should be a DNC bumper sticker...

“but the kids win in the long run.”

Yes...it’s for “their own good”...

“They will go back to partying three times a year and learning all school year long.”

Yes...another liberal answer to failed education...make the kids go all year and forgo the education that life itself provides during the summer....and then wonder why people don't have common sense and go along with cupcake bans...

Sure..greedy parents with double incomes love year round school...those of us who put our kids first miss the trips and vacations we used to spend with our kids...

“When you stop calling people “liberals” asking if they attended “madrassas” or go back on your meds we can have a conversation.”

I call em as I see em...the position of support you seem to have taken makes it clear to me that you have in fact ventured into the realm of the absurd....

Thus...”when cupcakes are banned only criminals will have cupcakes”..

meaning...what is the penalty for defying the ban?

If a parent were to send cupcakes in defiance ,will their child be sent to the office?....the parent called?....the police?

Just what is an “unhealthy” food?

Who determines this and on what basis?

Is there a list of “approved” foods?

Who is charged with enforcement and what are the penalties for non compliance?

A critical thinker would pose such questions....a conservative would pose such questions....

A liberal would “me too” all over themselves and attempt to browbeat those who may disagree...

*smirk*

“And the word is apparently not “appearently”.

Oh thank you miss spelling cop...LMAO...

“Public School was very good to you.”

Not too bad...I break 80g’s a year...not bad for no college..

“Maybe it was too many cupcakes.”

Nah...it was the dope and the booze...

Hell...when I was in high school...we had our own smoking area...
