CA: Central Valley school bans cupcakes in healthy food initiative
AP on Bakersfield Californian ^ | 9/4/07 | AP

A Fresno elementary school became the latest to ban cupcakes and other sugary treats in favor of healthier snacks this week.

School officials at Roosevelt Elementary School say the move is part of a districtwide initiative to improve student nutrition.

As part of the effort, the school substituted its "Donuts with Dad" event scheduled for later this week for one called "Fruit with Dad."

Officials say they're also giving students more whole-grain bread and reduced-fat cheese, and cutting out high-sugar breakfast cereals and soft drinks in vending machines.

I think this is a great idea.
School is for learning. Want to give cupcakes? Wrap them up so the kiddies can take them home.

And I can pitch them.

It’s in CA, so it’s even money that the fruit with Dad is his boyfriend.

How about “Daddy Day” and just serve fruit.

It could get confusing...they may be talking about Dad’s “special friend”

After watching some amazingly obese young kids at the pool yesterday, I find it hard to argue with this.

You know, if they would go back to allowing kids to PLAY at RECESS, not assign so much homework in the first through fourth grades so kids could GO OUTSIDE AND EXERCISE THEIR BODIES, and get used to exercise and how good it feels, THEN KIDS COULD HAVE NORMAL SNACKS like cookies and cakes.

Not that I’m a radical or anything.

So did I.
Treats were just that, treats.
They arrived three times a year, Christmas, Valentines Day and Easter.
That was great.

Now, every kid in the class of 30 brings cupcakes for birthdays, the teachers hand out candy if a kid answers a question right, every other day is a money raiser where goodies are given out and to top it all off, gym is eliminated and recess is 10 minutes long.

If we could go back to when I was in school, it would be great for me.

Actually, I homeschool and we eat apples and PB for snack.

How terrible of you!!! Don't you know there may be a child within a 10 mile radius of you that may be "allergic" to peanuts.

I am so glad I grew up when I did as flawed as it was.

“Fruit With Dad”. I cannot imagine applying that to my childhood life whatsoever.

Increasingly I feel like an alien in this world.

The primary culprit in th decline of “recess” is the enormous rise in state and federal standardized tests that have to be passed because of NCLB and state standards.

I wonder what the punishment is for candy smuggling, sales, & distribution? I suspect we will soon find out!
