Al Lewis is dead. Fred Thompson has two weeks to live. That argues strongly in Fred’s favor to my mind.
Fred is disciplined, efficient, focused and ready to roll.
Hopefully, with good security.
“Thompson will face increased scrutiny, particularly on his record as a social conservative, where opponents and pundits have already ascribed a certain wishy-washiness.”
Yep. Let the games begin. I’m up for it.
Don't forget he's also bald!
And wears fancy shoes...
I noticed that too on Fox tonite. Fred Barnes was okay, but Mort was as usual, whiney Mort.
They’re just mad cause Fred isn’t following their playbook, which is changing daily.
Go FRED!
I’ll bet he has more than one pair of them fancy shoes too!! That’s why he’s been going down to Mexico and bringing all those illegals accross the border...to shine his closet full of fancy shoes!!
Priceless.
In his red truck of course..
And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that. And the one after that.
(Seven more currently scheduled "debates" in all... here's hoping at least one of them is a real debate.)
The headlines will be misleading and deceitful, as is normal course for our 5th column media.
as the Republicans enter there nomination process without a clear front-runner for the first time since the seventies.
And it appears that somebody should send Guerin or his (her?) editor back to publik skool. Probably both of them.
I heard his bossy wife was just too busy pole dancing to be bothered with reviving him. Sad, really.
It looks to me now that it will be Giuliani/Romney, ONLY because Giuliani will not take a VEEP position from anyone.
I don’t see the RNC getting behind someone like Thompson to the exclusion of those several who have already engaged in debates and subjected themselves to scrutiny and brickbats. Ain’t gonna happen. In two or three months Thompson will be a distant memory. There will be NO grassroots swell of support for him, nor any “official” support from the party structure. At this point he is just, and still, a “concept”, entgertained as a “tantalizing possibility” only because of the usual and understandable less-than-100% satisfaction with any existing candidate.
Thompson voted for the toughest, most-extensive anti-illegal-immigration bill that came up during his tenure in the Senate. I’ve researched his votes and the floor debate on every single amendment that was put to a vote in the course of the debate on that bill (I would be glad to post the details if you’re interested).
In a nutshell, he voted staunchly against repeated attempts to extend welfare benefits to both legal and illegal immigrants, voted against attempts to make deportation more difficult, and voted for measures that toughened border enforcement and made it easier for INS agents to arrest illegals.
He did vote against two amendments dealing with chain migration, because it had been established in the Judiciary committee that questions of legal immigration would be dealt separately from illegal immigration. He also voted against efforts to shut down debate and implement a national ID card. Finally, he voted against establishing a $100 million employer verification office within the INS. I don’t have his own testimony to know why he voted against this, but in the floor debate there were questions about the effectiveness of the employer verification program proposed in that bill (e.g., a program that forced employers to verify all applicants could have negative implications for government intrusion into citizens’ lives; a program that only verified non-citizens would be ineffective because illegals could just claim to be citizens to avoid verification).
I’ve also learned in my research that several of the claims against Thompson related to his immigration record are misleading or outright false. For example, he did *not* vote for amnesty for Cuban and Nicaraguan illegal immigrants, as Numbers USA has reported (please let me know if you want the detail on this).
In addition, there have been reports slamming Thompson for voting against several Simpson amendments (e.g., claiming that he voted against Simpson’s attempt to increase penalties for falsely claiming citizenship). These claims are either ignorant or deliberate misrepresentation. What actually happened was that Teddy Kennedy tried to attach a minimim wage hike to three Simpson anti-immigration amendments. This forced Simpson — along with Thompson and the other senate republicans — to vote against his own amendments to block Kennedy’s little games.
You know, if Fred does win the election, he may be able to bring back some sanity to the election process. In 2012, candidates will use his decision to announce this late as a model for success. Gone will be the long election cycles that no one is really paying to attention anyway.
I hope so, I need less time here and more mowing my lawn...
Or I could just hire Mexicans, I am a pinko immigrant lover according to some...
I say: Asparagus, my friend, your sentiments are mine exactly. All day long I’ve been hearing about Fred’s brilliant strategy to go on the Jay Leno show to get a better audience than if he were in New Hampshire participating in the debate, but what about going on Leno last night, or Monday night and announcing? That would have been a great kick off for him and then he would have been able to be part of the Fox debate this evening. ??? I don’t get it. When are we going to see the "real" (not t.v.) Fred?
How could he digest without a fire in his belly?
