Bush thanks Aussie troops

US President George W. Bush today thanked Australian troops for their efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying their contribution was necessary for world peace.

Mr Bush and Prime Minister John Howard addressed the troops after sharing a barbecue lunch with them at Garden Island naval base in Sydney.

Mr Howard welcomed Mr Bush to Australia, telling him he was a "friend of Australia and a good friend of mine".

The US President told the army, navy and airforce personnel that their families sometimes wondered if what they were doing was worth it.

"I believe the work you are doing... is necessary for peace," he said.

Mr Bush said Australia had a fabulous military and it had been a privilege to have a chance to meet the ADF personnel...

I work on the base and it was a pretty good speech which was well received. On a personal level he seems to be a decent bloke.
