Rabid bear killed trying to enter Garrett Co. home ('blasted the beast with a shotgun')
Baltimore Sun ^ | Sept 05, 2007 | AP

HAGERSTOWN - A rabid black bear trying to rip out a window air conditioner lost its tug-of-war with a terrified housewife when her husband blasted the beast with a shotgun, the woman and a state wildlife official said today.

The bear rushed the house after Charlotte Stanton yelled out her screen door to try to scare it away from a goat pen. Stanton, 39, of rural Grantsville in Garrett County, said she was losing her tussle with the 134-pound sow when Michael Stanton pulled the trigger.

"I finally yelled at my husband, because I couldn't hold on to that air conditioner much longer," she said. "It seemed like forever, but I'm sure it was just seconds."

The load of buckshot didn't kill the bear, which lay bleeding and moaning in the yard of the Western Maryland home for about 30 minutes Aug. 29 before a state Natural Resources Police officer arrived to remove it.

He couldn’t shoot it again and end its misery? No more shells? Weird.

The bear was rabid.

Does that mean it was a Democrat?

I can’t figure that out either, but perhaps with the atmosphere of legalism that hangs over everything you do he was afraid. After all the threat was over and it wasn’t open season - perhaps he was afraid of getting charged with “murdering a bear”.

Fascinating, bears wander through her yard all the time and all the husband has is one buckshot. Wonder if he keeps it in his shirt pocket?

Uh... 134 lbs? What was this bear, 6 months old?

At close range you don’t necessarily need buckshot. Birdshot will blow a hole the size of a silver dollar in a railroad tie at close range.

I’m not so sure I’d fight with a rabid bear over an air conditioner.

A rabid black bear trying to rip out a window air conditioner

Global warming induced climate change has forced the black bears to 'borrow" air conditioners for their dens. /barf

“I’m not so sure I’d fight with a rabid bear over an air conditioner.”

I think she was thinking it was easier trying to hold the AC in the window then trying to fight the bear in the window.
Big hunk of metal between me and the bear works for me.

You have a point there, perhaps he’s lucky it tested for rabies. Even the special interest whackos don’t like rabies.

The gun grabbers in this state really think that us gun owners ARE rabid and would like to get rid of us.

Yeah, I suppose that would inhibit many people, like a case of self-defense with an intruder.

True. A slug is a far more devastating projectile for penetration and expansion than buckshot. Save your buckshot for humans up close.

Yeah, I had a friend up in the Southern Tier in NY state, he was out Pheasant hunting and noticed some tree branches moving with brush around it, he pulled the branches aside and there was a bear standing upright directly in front of him, he swung the shotgun around and fired out of reflex. It took a quarter of the top of the skull off with birdshot.

It took a quarter of the top of the skull and rear third of the nose off with birdshot. That was almost point blank with a bird barrel.

The problem is that gun safety and gun shooting should be properly taught in public schools.

"Michael Stanton, 49, won't be charged with a wildlife violation because the state allows killing bears out of season to defend people and livestock, The Cumberland Times-News reported."

Seems clear cut to me.

I've shot a lot of weapons, and thousands of rounds of ammunition and didn't know this (shooting a RR tie at close range doesn't sound too safe to me). How deep does it penetrate, or does it go all the way through?

Oh Yes “shooting a RR tie at close range doesn’t sound too safe to me” and probably illegal, Shooting anything at close range is not recommended, but a shot gun with bird shot will do Extreme damage at close range, such a cut off small trees and fence posts. If you were to shoot some one at close range with a shot gun you would probably cut them in half. With a shot gun you have the choice of many types of loads from slugs to very fine shot bird loads, but at close range all possible loads are all pretty much the same, a large amount of lead in a big wad. If I remember right a load of Double ought buck is very similar to being shot with 12, 22 rifles at once. Kinda spooky, Glen

After all the threat was over and it wasn’t open season - perhaps he
was afraid of getting charged with “murdering a bear”.

A few years back a homeowner in the wilds of California had a bear
take up residence under the house.

After repeated non-lethal attempts to evict the bear, the homeowner got
legal permission from the government to have a hired expert
remove the bear, even if lethal methods were needed.

The bear had to be killed.

The homeowner was the recipient of plenty of death threats from
animal-lovers.

(This was reported in The Los Angeles Times)
