Yeah, I had a friend up in the Southern Tier in NY state, he was out Pheasant hunting and noticed some tree branches moving with brush around it, he pulled the branches aside and there was a bear standing upright directly in front of him, he swung the shotgun around and fired out of reflex. It took a quarter of the top of the skull off with birdshot.

It took a quarter of the top of the skull and rear third of the nose off with birdshot. That was almost point blank with a bird barrel.

I have slugs loaded in my home defense shotgun.

The problem is that gun safety and gun shooting should be properly taught in public schools.

"Michael Stanton, 49, won't be charged with a wildlife violation because the state allows killing bears out of season to defend people and livestock, The Cumberland Times-News reported."

Seems clear cut to me.

“I’m not so sure I’d fight with a rabid bear over an air conditioner.”

Well, you don’t have to go for a head shot then.

"I finally yelled at my husband, because I couldn't hold on to that air conditioner much longer," she said.

"It seemed like forever, but I'm sure it was just seconds."

Remember that when seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

Birdshot will blow a hole the size of a silver dollar in a railroad tie at close range.

I've shot a lot of weapons, and thousands of rounds of ammunition and didn't know this (shooting a RR tie at close range doesn't sound too safe to me). How deep does it penetrate, or does it go all the way through?

Oh Yes “shooting a RR tie at close range doesn’t sound too safe to me” and probably illegal, Shooting anything at close range is not recommended, but a shot gun with bird shot will do Extreme damage at close range, such a cut off small trees and fence posts. If you were to shoot some one at close range with a shot gun you would probably cut them in half. With a shot gun you have the choice of many types of loads from slugs to very fine shot bird loads, but at close range all possible loads are all pretty much the same, a large amount of lead in a big wad. If I remember right a load of Double ought buck is very similar to being shot with 12, 22 rifles at once. Kinda spooky, Glen

You have given me about 5 ideas for experiments, all involving firearms. Thank you.

After all the threat was over and it wasn’t open season - perhaps he
was afraid of getting charged with “murdering a bear”.

A few years back a homeowner in the wilds of California had a bear
take up residence under the house.

After repeated non-lethal attempts to evict the bear, the homeowner got
legal permission from the government to have a hired expert
remove the bear, even if lethal methods were needed.

The bear had to be killed.

The homeowner was the recipient of plenty of death threats from
animal-lovers.

(This was reported in The Los Angeles Times)
