Some of the family will run down to the beach in the AM and pull the plastic furniture off the porch, put things away and do the general “make ready” stuff.

For us - looks like mild winds and some much needed rain.

Folks have been anxious for this one to develop into something since Felix made landfall. It’s been a long week for some.

Well hopefully the disappointment will continue and it turns out to be just a rain maker.

“Sub Tropical Storm” warning?

Wasn’t this kind of thing formerly known as a tropical depression?

Subtropical storms are different in their structure from tropical systems (see link by tapatio above).

Subtropical systems have been assigned names since 2002. They are designated as a depression or storm based on maximum sustained winds as are tropical systems.

Nope. Different from a Tropical Depression. Actually has winds above Tropical Storm Strength, but a different structure from a purely tropical storm.

Now I feal stupid learning something from USA Today.

“Possibly the most puzzling feature of the hybrid storm, is its ability to constrict its core of fastest winds from an enormous scale — sometimes blowing over an area more than 600 miles wide — to a small diameter, say less than 100 miles wide. The wind speed often intensifies from gale force strength of 39 mph or more to, at times, 100 mph as the storm’s central pressure drops.

The pressure in a developing hybrid storm can sometimes fall at an alarming rate, reaching ten millibars (about 0.3 inches of mercury) or more per hour in extreme cases. More typically, the pressure fall is one to three millibars per hour (0.03 to 0.09 inches per hour), but a continuous fall at this rate can rapidly intensify even a meager storm into a monster in less than a day. This growth spurt is termed “explosive deepening” and usually lasts for 12 to 36 hours.”

I have a wireless business in Myrtle and North Myrtle Beach...
To the meteorological Freepers, what is your best guess of it hitting there and what strength?

Subtropical systems have been assigned names since 2002.

That's what I thought. Back in the good old days, this wouldn't have been named.

So far looks a bit west of the track. Station SNSN7 is near Little River/Calabash. You can check that as the storm moves around.

Station OCPN7 is off to the east at Ocean Crest Pier.

I’ll keep an eye on them and Buoy 41024 as this thing moves by my neck of the woods.
