Free to Choose has a chapter that everyone should read. He describes four scenarios for spending. The most inefficient is when someone else (like government) is spending another’s money for what they (government) wants. The most efficient is the individual spending for their own benefit. Other, intermediate scenarios are like when someone buys another a Christmas or Birthday present, they can be more inefficient, but that scenario is not as bad as the one where the spending is so detached from the individual.
The key is that collectivism destroys personal initiative. GO FIGURE
