Highlights from Democrat's Univision debate

John Edwards: "Just a few months ago, I was in Canton, Mississippi, as part of a poverty tour, and I met with poultry workers who worked in a poultry plant in Canton, Mississippi. And one of them was a man named Daniel who had been badly hurt on the job. And because of his injuries, he wasn't able to work. And when he asked about trying to get health care or workers' compensation, the first question they asked him was, "What's your immigration status?" This is a perfect example of what's wrong with Washington and why the government is not working for the American people, and not working for Latino families. (Applause.)"

Richardson: "I was under the impression that in this debate Spanish was going to be permitted because I've always supported Univision all my career, but I'm disappointed today that 43 million Latinos in this country, for them not to hear one of their own speak Spanish -- (applause) -- is unfortunate."

Hillary: "I am proud to work with my friend, Senator Menendez, on trying to make sure that in the process of doing immigration reform, we don't separate families, we try to have family unification as one of the goals. So in addition to giving people a path to legalization, we want to make sure their families can come along with them."

Richardson: "Yes, I would [stop the immigration raids], because it shows that -- the fact that a dysfunctional relationship between the Congress and the president caused the breakdown of a potential compromise. Now we have to wait till 2008 and 2009, and these raids are ineffective, they're a symbol of what's wrong with a broken immigration policy."

“Half-white, half-hispanic”?? I thought Hispanics were Caucasian.

Hispanic is not a race. It is a term made up to further divide people into different groups.

For example, David Ortiz of the Red Sox is considered "Hispanic", and he is not Caucasian.

Also, the plots of most of the Latin American soap operas are “way better” than the plots of most of the American soap operas.

LOL! I thought so, too.

One Latina I knew from Brazil had a father who was Mulatto. I don't remember what were were listening to on the radio in the car but it had something to do with some white liberal idiot complaining about Latino rights and racism. She got disgusted when the fool made a statement about race and she yelled at the radio "down there I'M WHITE!".

The way that some of these idiots frame the whole lot of Latinos as some downtrodden minority that can't help themselves is disgusting, but indicative of how the Democrats view Hispanics. It's not good.

FYI....I listened to a Fox news affiliate reporter before the debate who said that there IS a Spanish Republican Debate planned. So far, only McCain has agreed, they are waiting for replies from the rest of the candidates and will then schedule a date.

Oh, and did I mention that there is no doubt in my mind that when questioned directly, the top tier Republican candidates would make similar statements to what the Dems said AND that’s probably the reason they are reluctant to participate. Unlike the Dems, I think they attempt to hide their SPECIFIC agendas because they don’t want conservatives to hear them pandering to both sides.

Any Republican that enters a debate in Spanish will lose my vote.

I’ve always heard that the definition of `whiteness’ among Brazilians is very liberal, indeed.

And the beautiful women of Ipanema stretch that definition even further.

;^)
