Republicans picked up 30 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2006. Bush got 40 percent in 2004, an impressive number to be sure, but one that depends heavily on the Cuban voters in Florida and on Texas Hispanics. The new wave of Hispanics coming from Mexico and Central America don’t have the same political values as the conservative Cubans, and the older, conservative, Hispanic families will be the first to admit that Hispanic neighborhoods are fast losing their conservative culture. Read what you want, but the GOP better have something besides a pandering plan. Hispanics will go 25 to 30 percent Republican in the future, with the trend and the population numbers going towards Democrats.
They will be lucky if they are not embarassed by something they say that is lost in translation. This is risky and wont last.
I’m hoping you’re right.
AS you say, Hispanic is not monolithic. Also, many do not aspire to be downtrodden. They seek to succeed and to identify with the dominant group.
