I also noticed this trend (that more Iraqi now blame Al Qaida than blame U.S. for continued violence).

Also, most Sunnis want a unifed Iraq, but not so many Shias and Kurds.

And, most Shias still think it’s o.k. to attack coalition forces, Iraqi forces and Iraqi civilians; Sunnis seems split on the subject; and, vast majority of Kurds think attacks on soldiers and civilians are just simply wrong.

I think, when we leave, the motivation to attack Iraqi military and police and civilian targets will drop a lot. The confusion that is caused by the presence of a foreign army will no longer attract youth to the insurgency. So, given the training and equipment they have received and will continue to receive from us, the Iraqis should be able soon if not now to defend their country.

I also think, even after we withdraw, we still need to supply them with training and technical assistance, intelligence, air power and shield them from the possibility of a foreign invasion. And, I think that if we do o.k. in the next election, we’ll be able to continue to help the Iraqi government for a long time.

But, if the Democrats precipitate a immediate withdrawal and a complete cut-off of aid, I fear for the country and the region.

Sooner or later, the Iraqis will have to defend themselves. But, for a variety of reasons, unless they do so “sooner,” there won’t be any “later.”
