If you rely on official government statements and the major media, the entire incident involving Flight 1824 was "benign" and was never a security risk. It involved 12 people, all of Middle Eastern origin, reportedly carrying suspicious items in their luggage.
"It was all benign," said Dave Couvertier, the FBI agent from the Tampa, Florida Orlando FBI office.
Hardly Benign: What really happened:
The Northeast Intelligence Network initially received information about Flight 1824 from a trusted federal source early Thursday, who described an incident that could hardly be considered benign by any standards.
According to the information developed during the course of this investigation, there were at least nine individuals of Middle Eastern origin who were reportedly traveling from Orlando, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia.
The x-ray of their bags found questionable items inside the luggage, and the explosive trace detection tests resulted in a "positive hit" for explosives, specifically, SEMTEX, an explosive commonly used by Islamic terrorists.
Due to the multiple independent "hits" for traces of SEMTEX, TSA authorities emptied the luggage in a secured area, and were astonished by what they found. Based on a thorough inspection of all the luggage belonging to these Middle Eastern passengers, authorities also found multiple strands of electrical wire with the ends stripped of the insulation, thus exposing the copper wire, small screw drivers, clocks, cocoa butter, 2 tubs of butter, batteries of various types, a computer laptop, and multiple bottles of hydrogen peroxide -- 144 ounces in all.
Even more disconcerting, TSA and security officials observed that two of the Middle Eastern men intended for the flight had smeared Vaseline on their arms and neck areas -- a common tactic among hand-to-hand fighters who want the advantage in the event someone tries to grab them or put them in a headlock.

You notice the Muslims keep doing this kind of stuff, the flying Imaams, etc., to disrupt flights and get attention. just to keep the public stirred up and letting us know they are out there.
Wow! it’s worth reading, following the various links and reading his (Campbell’s) blog
I fly every week, unless I am on vacation or in training.
I am not worried, frankly, that if a bunch of greased-up would be martyrs try something, I would be alone in acting to stop them. I KNOW from conversations with fellow travelers [ men and women] that the passengers would just keep coming after them until it was over.
...and they were let go???? Assuming that everything in that article is accurate, I can’t fathom that at least some of these people weren’t held on some charge. Am I missing something here?
This sounds as if this might possibly have been more than just a trial run.
Frankly, the FBI cannot be trusted to tell the truth about these things. They lie to the public “for their own good.” Since these were evidently Saudis, the pressure was probably on from above to let them go and brush the whole thing under the rug.
Agreed, these practice runs with non-illegal substitute (dummy) equipment that resembles the real thing are recon and prep for a more successful attack.
WHY IN THE F^$K DO THEY KEEP TRYING TO DOWNPLAY THIS STUFF? Remember Annie Jacobson and the Syrian "musicians"? The DHS downplayed that story and actively discredited Jacobson as a paranoid, xenophobic loon, which couldn't have helped her career as a journalist. Then information was released under FOIA that corroborated everything Jacobon said, and Michael Jerkoff and the rest of the useless bureaucrat morons at DHS had nothing to say. No explanation, no apology, NOTHING. We're in the middle of a g$%damn war, and citizens are castigated for reporting suspicious activity, and now we're supposed to believe a bunch of arabs with bomb-making materials trying to get on a flight is "benign"?
Go take a long walk off a short pier, Dave Couvertier.
The goal it make people afraid to report suspicious activity.
I like to think that as these rats are free to go back to their holes (mosques), the FBI is keeping an eye on them.
But I’m surely being far too optimistic.
We can only hope that Jack Bauer trailed them back to their headquarters. Unfortunately, Jack is fictional and the government is incompetent.
Ping
Definitely at least a trial run.
They had all the components, at least simulated, for IEDs.
The only reason I can think of is to see if a cylinder full of hydrocarbons would get through security. Benign?
I think you meant to insert the word "not" in to that statement. And, then I'd agree wholeheartedly.
Incredible isn't it? Law enforcement in this country is so afraid of PC-ness and defense lawyers, that obvious conspiracies to commit acts of terrorism, (which is what a "dry run" is) are not prosecuted. These Jihadi scum should be in prison for life, or better yet, hung by the neck until dead.
Very doubtful.
