Rudy Giuliani, after holding the front-runner spot in the race for the Republican presidential nomination for months, has seen his lead nearly evaporate with the entry of former senator and TV star Fred Thompson into the race, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds.
The poll contains other foreboding signs for the former New York City mayor as well, including indications that Republican primary voters may not buy his argument that running Americas biggest city makes Giuliani fit to occupy the White House.
After seeing his support among Republican primary voters rise to 38 percent in August, Giuliani was backed by only 27 percent of respondents in the most recent survey, narrowing his lead over Thompson to 5 percentage points after holding a 20-point edge last month.

Ping!
Bye Bye Rudy!!
I read today that the MSM still considers McCain a 1st tier candidate.
HCIDS.
The MSM wants him to be a first tier candidate. McCain’s problem is that the GOP primary voters do not want him to be a first tier candidate or a candidate at all, for that matter.
Hillary 44%
Obama 26%
Edwards 17%
With Hillary having it all but sewn up already, the real interest lies in the GOP race.
The changing poll numbers should make things very interesting for some time to come.
I do not want to gloat, but Fred will be firmly in the lead within one month. This field is weak, and Fred is a great candidate. It is not a fair fight.
Anyone over 10% is a first tier candidate.
Wow... That’s quite a Palpatine neck she has going.
If you go to Realclearpolitics. com and click on their graph of the Republican Nomination, Fred’s line is pointing nearly straight up, at almost a 90 degree angle since the date of his announcement. Romney’s arrow is drooping like dead flower.
Rudy’s arrow is flat, a straight line. Fred’s arrow looks like an Exocet missile heading for Rudy’s flat line. LOL
Out of touch much, MSM?
This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1263 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone September 4-9, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points.
Five months is a lonnnnnng time.
(I am not a Rudy supporter!)
Hey Rudy, Freds up!
“I do not want to gloat, but Fred will be firmly in the lead within one month. This field is weak, and Fred is a great candidate. It is not a fair fight.”
The field of ‘top tier’ is indeed weak. No one exemplifies that like good ol’ Fred.
