Several New Jersey police agencies searched Monday for a killer who apparently walked away from Ancora Psychiatric Hospital on Sunday with a backpack full of survivalist equipment.

Authorities searched for William Enman on Monday in Atlantic and Camden counties near the Ancora campus in Winslow Township and also in other places where he was thought to have contacts.

"As far as we're concerned he's still a danger to others," said Robyn D'Onofrio, a spokeswoman for the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.

Enman escaped after being allowed to take a walk on the grounds a little after 2 p.m. Sunday. He was expected back by 3 p.m. but didn't show up.

Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi said Enman is believed to own property in Nova Scotia, Canada. The prosecutor's office did not have any information about the specific type of gear he was carrying in his backpack.

Hmmm I don’t think I am going camping this coming weekend after all. Maybe he will get caught soon.

If he has really has really left the mental facility completely then they need to search for him in neighboring states. ;> As a NJ resident I know.

Sources say the escaped man was last seen running an illegal card game at the hospital.

The article doesn’t really describe an “escape.” Sounds more like he was allowed to leave. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to leave but can mentally deranged killers be trusted? Apparently someone in charge thought so.

I wonder if this is the same guy

NYT-May 16, 1995

It was also learned last week that William Enman, the confessed killer of a man and child, and who like Mr. Jennings was found not guilty for the reason of insanity, had married and fathered a child last year while a patient at Ancora State Hospital in Camden County. The hospital permits Mr. Enman to visit his new family three times a week in Hammonton, several miles from the hospital.

Senator Codey said that Mr. Enman had escaped from Marlboro several years ago, armed with a bow and arrow, before he was tracked down and returned to the hospital. He also said the patient had an extreme hatred of minority groups.

I was waiting for this thread.

I live about 12 miles from Ancora.

Amazing they allowed him to go out (without supervision) The guy had a backpack with survival material in it.

Needless to say, there are going to be some interesting campfire stories this autumn in the pine barrens.

Do they keep “backpacks full of survivalist equipment” at the psychiatric hospital?

That's what I was wondering. In post #8 it says he "married and fathered a child last year while a patient at Ancora State Hospital in Camden County" also. It sounds like there is more freedom in the NJ nuthouse than out in the community. Does the hospital provide gun caches for their right-wing wack jobs? Maybe I can move out and be your neighbor, pandy. Life sounds good at Ancora. ;^)
