Chalk it up as another quirk of the 2008 GOP presidential field: The top-tier Repubican who entered the race as the supposed godsend for socially conservative voters in the Bible Belt who are dissatisfied with the other candidates is someone who does not attend church on a regular basis.
Asked about his religious beliefs during an appearance before about 500 Republicans in South Carolina yesterday, Fred Thompson said he attends church when he visits his mother in Tennessee but does not belong to a church or attend regularly at his home in McLean, Va., just outside Washington. The actor and former senator, who was baptized in the Church of Christ, said he gained his values from "sitting around the kitchen table" and said he did not plan to speak about his religious beliefs on the stump. "I know that I'm right with God and the people I love," he said, according to Bloomberg News Service. It's "just the way I am not to talk about some of these things."

But the candidate put such speculation to rest yesterday. And he did not seem particularly concerned that his admission would hurt him with voters. "Me getting up and talking about what a wonderful person I am and that sort of thing, I'm not comfortable with that, and I don't think it does me any good," he said. "People will make up their own mind about that, and that's the way I like it."

Ping!
Well, considering that we are admonished “not to forsake the assembling of ourselves one with another,” I’d say that he, in fact, ISN’T right with God.
Honestly, people who say this just kill me. No, going to church doesn’t give you brownie points, but I always liked Ravi Zacharias’ analogy to the ember burning alone outside of the fireplace; eventually it dies out. That’s what it’s like for those who do not regularly attend church or at least have some kind of regular fellowship (a house church for instance) with other believers.
Good. At least we know that President Thompson isn’t going to walk around with an over-sized Bible full of blank pages like ol’ BJ Clinton.
Come on Washington Post....Is this your best shot???
Nearly everybody thinks they are right with God. If you want to know what someone really believes, watch what they do, not what they say.
I’m liking Thompson more and more.
He’s an adult conservative, not a compassionate conservative.
He’s federalist, not a social conservative.
He’s deist without being religious or dogmatic.
If I didn’t think Romney had a better chance against the Democrat nominee, I’d be leaning Thompson right now.
“Good. At least we know that President Thompson isn’t going to walk around with an over-sized Bible full of blank pages like ol’ BJ Clinton.”
It didn’t have blank pages.
Clinton’s Bible was hollowed out. The false interior was simply a cigar case.
Sorry,...I’m a sinner too, and I just couldn’t help myself.
There are many who attend church regularly then leave and lead despicable lives. IMO, it’s not how often you go to church or a synagogue, it’s how you lead your life and treat your fellow man.
Well, I don’t think GW Bush always goes to church either, but he is certainly a believer and reads the bible faithfully.
Ronald Reagan likewise did not attend church regularly. Still, he was a very good President of the USA.
Unlike, Bill Clinton, who advertised his church going whenever he got into a morals dilemma, Bush, Reagan, and Thompson do not make photo ops of attending church services. I would rather they attended church regularly as an example to others, but it’s not my top criteria for a POTUS.
Oh, yeah? Jesus taught on the mountain and beside the sea. I don’t remember scripture describing his denomination. Seems to me when he went to church he knocked the money tables over. Besides which, lots of people get their spiritual guidance from TV ministries. And you feel free to state FACTS about another person’s soul? I don’t think so! I am so thankful that God is the author of my salvation - not man.
Has the question been asked of the other candidates? Does Rudy regularly attend church? Does Mitt regularly attend church? Does John M. regularly attend church? What good does it do them, anyway?!
teehee ...probably true though
The liberal media is very good at finding reasons why conservatives shouldn’t vote for conservatives.
Frankly, I just found it interesting, and it doesn't affect my opinion of Fred either way.
That same ember burns out none the less. Does it not?
I haven’t gone to church in years. My relationship with god is personal and fulfilling on it’s own, I don’t need to show up at church to prove that. Thompson understands that too. :)
