Fred Thompson Within One Point of Giuliani in new CNN Poll

Five days after he officially jumped into the Republican race for the White House, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson finds himself in a statistical dead heat with frontrunner Rudy Giuliani, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Tuesday.

The former New York City mayor garners 28 percent nationally among registered Republicans while Thompson is only one point behind at 27 percent — well within the poll's 5 percentage point margin of error. In a similar poll taken in August, Giuliani registered 29 percent while Thompson, then not yet an official presidential candidate, was at 22 percent.

CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider notes, "Thompson has the edge among evangelical Republicans and especially among his fellow southerners — that's where Thompson has made the biggest gains."

Specifically, Thompson now holds the advantage among men, southerners, older voters (age 50 and over) and ideological conservatives. Conversely, Giuliani leads among women, voters in the Northeast and Midwest, younger voters (under 50) and self-described GOP moderates.

Arizona Sen. John McCain comes in a distant third at 15 percent, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney close behind at 11 percent. McCain was at 16 percent in the August poll while Romney registered 12 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee now stands at 5 percent, while no other Republican candidate pulls more than 2 percentage points. The poll surveyed 318 registered Republicans from September 7-9.

Why is CNN trying to knock off Giuliani?

Because they believe that America is a liberal nation and therefor the Republican that is the greatest threat to their anointed one is a liberal Republican -- that's what CNN believes.

When people start paying more attention as the year progresses, Fred’s numbers will go higher and Rudy’s will go lower.

mark my words.

I have personally changed 4 engineers minds on politics. (I actually had one firmware programmer ask me in 2005, “If Bush continues the war can’t he suspend election’s?) Unbelievable stuff coming from educated yet socially stupid people.

Thompson has the edge among evangelical Republicans...

Can only Republicans be evangelical, or do they also have to be Christian? Can Jews be evangelical too?

Yes. Folks have been indoctrinated to understand the left is the party of the people. (Marxism) Rush Limbaugh is very good at exposing this with his humor and intellect. Play it out-loud when you can. They listen from curiosity at first, then realize they believe the same things. It takes some time. That’s when they break from the mold. (Make sure you’re facts are clear and precise when questioned.) :^)

Any tips?

Something else that Rush does is keep it simple.

Rush will stay with a simple idea rather than give a rant that lists the entire litany.

How many times when we have a chance for a casual few minutes with someone, do we lay out the entire top ten reasons why “their” candidate or their idea is wrong, as we watch the other persons eyes glaze over?

Rush listens and truly hears the other person and then rather than tell them an answer, he instead lays down a short thoughtful response that is really geared to help the other person discover the truth for themselves.

Rush drops delay bombs, so that the liberal will have his own epiphany three months later, Rush lays one small brick at a time.

"CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider notes, "Thompson has the edge among evangelical Republicans..."

But I thought evangelicals were wary of Fred, according to articles I've seen in the past few days.

I generally don't put a lot of trust in polls, but by what I've seen posted on the many blogs I visit, Fred's pickin' up steam. Go Fred!!!
