STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Monroe County district attorney says a man on a terrorism watch list was discovered taking photos of the Interstate 80 bridge crossing the Delaware River.

District Attorney E. David Christine tells The Morning Call of Allentown that police talked with the man Monday, but didn't detain him. Christine says the man told police he was taking pictures for fun while on vacation. Christine says authorities didn't learn that the man was on the FBI watch list until later.

The man's name wasn't immediately released.

The man was taking pictures from the New Jersey side of the bridge.

Unbelievable!

This state is a joke much of the time.....and this is just one of those times.

My daughter brought me back a Hot Dog Johnnys coffee mug and one of those yellow HDJ teeshirts one time.

My husband bought a 50th anniversary mug at a yard sale here on Long Island, a few years back. Family members thought it was great fun to use it.

Since then, my daughter and son-in-law have remarked several times that they see signs for HDJ while they are traveling along I-80 on their way to visit her in-laws near Pittsburgh.

For fun, I gave her HDJ mugs, a cap and a yo-yo for her birthday.

No one in our family has been to the restaurant, yet.

NJ Troopers do not usually let you go unless they cannot find a reason to keep you. They are tough.

Someone dropped the ball, whether the Feds sending the list, or NJ receiving the list, but this should not have happened.

Now, let’s not profile this guy or anything.

Interesting article. It still doesn't address the circumstances as to how the "terror suspect" was "found taking pictures". Nothing in the story supports the headline's use of the word "caught" or for that matter the term "sizing up I-80 bridge". In terms of sensationalized headlines that have very little correlation with a story, this is one of the better ones I've seen.

This guy may well have been up to no good. But unless we are willing to expand the definition of "probable cause" for being detained to include a lot of innocent activities that would piss a lot of us off if the police detained us any time we were seen doing them, then there is no reason to spin this as the police not doing their job.

Commerce could always take the Portland Bridge about 5 miles south, if needed. Here's a link to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission with pictures.

The food’s great, if you like hotdogs.
It gets very crowded in the summer time.

“The Patriot Act is harassing the populace, while the police are saying, “have a nice day” to suspicious persons.”

I couldn’t open up a CD with on online bank last month because my address didn’t match what the credit bureaus had on record. The street address and zip code were the same, but we were recently advised to use our township instead of the city down the road corresponding to the zip code. That’s what I did, and I was rejected. And the bank said I couldn’t edit it once it was submitted.

I simply chose another bank, and submitted the address they wanted to see. It was approved.

The Portland Bridge is considerably smaller and there are areas around it where rigs are not allowed to go.

It is not large enough to handle the traffic of the I 80 bridge.

How long would it have taken for the cop to make a phone call? He should have the number since the guy was photographing a non-descript bridge and the cop was suspicious enough to run the guy's name. No one's being "detained"--when you get pulled over for speeding they run your plates and license--you're not "detained."

Oh really? Next time you get pulled over, try leaving before the cop says you are free to go.

Did you know that a car dealer can't sell you any car until you've been cleared as someone not on the terror lists?

I wonder if that is the same list as the one the airlines were using which contained a lot of common names.

I was trying to take a picture of a train in Winterhaven, CA last year when a CHPie rolled up and asked what I was doing. I got kind of mad, since it is a hobby of mine, and he only wrote down my California Drivers License, but didnt run me and took off.

There is a statewide mandate in CA to ID people taking pictures of transportation, pipelines and bridges. I checked with someone I knew at the CHP to make sure what the guy told me was true, and it was.

But I could have been a Swedish Meatball Terrorist for all he knew....but I probably would have become more upset if he ran me through CLETS and NCIC.

Real hardship to wait for the cop to run your name while your taking pictures of an ugly bridge? I hope they question everyone doing things out of the ordinary. I’ve driven over that bridge a zillion times and never once seen someone photograph it-—Now why they didn’t have immediate knowledge the guy was on the terror list is a much bigger cause for concern than being “detained.” Absolutely idiotic not to hold the guy the few seconds it takes to make a phone call!

Are we going to start detaining every tourist who takes pictures of a bridge, or the Statue of Liberty, or the Washington Monument, or any other national landmark that happens to be both a tourist attraction and a potential terrorism target. Has legislation been passed that makes photography of landscapes or landmarks an offense that is probable cause for detention?

Yes, but only every muslim non-legal-resident, student or illegally ovestayed tourist.
Without question.

You got a problem with that?

I hear the Amish have a real problem with these bridges.

Route 80 isn’t big enough to handle the traffic of Route 80 but that’s another story.

True, the Portland bridge has half the lanes, one lane each direction. I do know that approaches from 80W at Columbia will accommodate tractor trailers. What I’m not too sure about is if they can get up 611N through the Gap. Narrow with lots of curves. Going south (really east) on 611 instead of N won’t work for tall trailers due to that overpass that is there right after the toll.

There’s always the Belvidere Bridge (FREE! but small)
