STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Monroe County district attorney says a man on a terrorism watch list was discovered taking photos of the Interstate 80 bridge crossing the Delaware River.

District Attorney E. David Christine tells The Morning Call of Allentown that police talked with the man Monday, but didn't detain him. Christine says the man told police he was taking pictures for fun while on vacation. Christine says authorities didn't learn that the man was on the FBI watch list until later.

The man's name wasn't immediately released.

The man was taking pictures from the New Jersey side of the bridge.

But they had no reason to go any further than that, yet some on this thread seem to think that since he wasn't shipped off to Gitmo until his identity could be confirmed the police were acting with a September 10 mentality.

The Sept. 10th mentality was letting him go on his way before his identity could be confirmed.

Google maps never display, in detail, the critical supporting substructure of bridges.

No, but this one does. I don't like what I see. It's not what I thought from other's descriptions, and appears much less robust than what I was imagining.

bought a car not all that long ago and the dealer did not submit my name to any agency to determine if I was on any terror watch list.

I bought one less than three weeks ago, but they could very well have made such a call while they were "completing the paperwork", and I wouldn't have a clue.

They look retro to at least the 1950s... to me anyway...

Very chic, for Soviet Military Dress up. They do that to all the "for show" stuff. That particular rocket launcher looks to be something out of WW-II, or immediately thereafter.

It could have been some monument for all I know.

It does look like a display piece. Especially the way it's up on that concrete ramp. Something like what one might find outside of a VFW or American Legion hall. One of the VFWs in my hometown had a tank, I've seen WW-II and WW-I era artillery pieces as well. The Legion club in Sherman Texas has an F-86 on a pylon. It was getting pretty grubby looking, but they spiffied it up a couple of years ago, and it now looks better than new, at least from a distance.

Nitwits. Ask him questions and then simply let him go?

That’s part of our immigration plan now.

lol! Sure seems to be. But....Chertoff has this "gut feeling". I guess he should.

Did you know that a car dealer can't sell you any car until you've been cleared as someone not on the terror lists? The Patriot Act is harassing the populace, while the police are saying, "have a nice day" to suspicious persons.

It's always easiest to impose laws on the lawbiding. Doesn't "do" anything, but it gives the illusion something is happening.

it appears even clearer that the police did their job and the criticism of their handling of the situation is an overreaction.

I wouldn't call it a total overreaction. If the police had acted as the first story indicated, they'd have guilty of malfeasance. But it now appears they acted more in line with what many here wanted them to do.

I'd assume they took a look at why the gentleman was on the watch list. What is the point of having a list if you don't, well watch, the people on the watch list? I don't like the idea of a list that is is of folks with "suspected" terrorist ties. I'd want people with something between "suspicion" and conviction in a court of law. Something more like, "probable cause to suspect", that is there was some real evidence, but not conclusive evidence, of terrorist ties. If the evidence were conclusive, the folks would hopefully be in jail or at least deported. Again I'd deport on "strong suspicion", foreigner have no right to be in the US. (Doesn't apply to citizens of course, you don't deport them and legally they aren't foreigners, most aren't foreigners at all.)

Not good. Do a google maps search for “Delaware Water Gap” and zoom in. This bridge covers a large expanse of river between PA and NJ, and on the NJ side, the road closely parallels the river for a couple miles with just a guardrail between traffic and the river. In fact, it’s so long, twisted and busy with commuters and semis that every time I’d drive back to NJ with my kids (we used to live in NJ and most family is in PA), I would have these horrible thoughts of what on earth would I ever do if we ever went over the side.

This would be a key bridge to hit as it is THE major east-west artery there, and its loss would impact an incredible amount of traffic and commerce.
