ICE: Tab to remove illegal residents would approach $100 billion
cnn ^ | 9-12-07

It would cost at least $94 billion to find, detain and remove all 12 million people believed to be staying illegally in the United States, the federal government estimated Wednesday.

Julie Myers, the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, gave the figure during a hearing before a Senate committee Wednesday.

She acknowledged it was based on "very rough calculations."

An ICE spokesman later said the $94 billion did not include the cost of finding illegal immigrants, nor court costs -- dollar amounts that are largely unknowable.

He said the amount was calculated by multiplying the estimated 12 million people by the average cost of detaining people for a day: $97. That was multiplied by the average length of detention: 32 days.

ICE officials also considered transportation costs, which average $1,000 per person.

But that amount can vary widely, the spokesman said. Some deportees are simply driven by bus across the border, while others must take charter planes to distant countries, he said.

Finally, the department looked at personnel costs, bringing the total to roughly $94 billion.

The statistic is likely to become one more piece of fodder in the heated debate between the Bush administration -- which has fought for a "path to citizenship" for people who have lived peaceably in the United States -- and those who want to see more aggressive enforcement of immigration laws, up to, and including, the deportation of all illegal immigrants.

I thought they’d come up with a number like 10 trillion or something, 100 billion is not that much all things considered.

Bush plans push on immigrant laws, fines

The 25 measures — some new and some that expand on current policies — come in addition to the expected announcement of a plan to crack down on illegal immigrants by forcing employers to fire workers with discrepancies in their Social Security information.

Federal judge blocks tougher penalties for illegal-alien hiring
By Michelle Malkin • August 31, 2007 10:03 PM Oh, crikey. A San Francisco federal judge appointed by guess-who interferes with stiffer employer sanctions for businesses that knowingly hire illegal aliens because she says she needs more “breathing room:”

The Social Security Administration cannot start sending out letters to employers next week that carry with them more serious penalties for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, a federal judge ruled Friday.

Ruling on a lawsuit by the nation’s largest federation of labor unions against the U.S. government, U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney granted a temporary restraining order prohibiting the so-called “no-match” letters from going out as planned starting Tuesday…

WOW! More than a year's cost at rebuilding Iraq. We can handle it. Cut taxes again and reap the sales reward. Get the illegals under control.

I must post this as it is close to me and I know this land VERY well.

Cheap at twice the cost. The long term cost of not removing the illegals is far greater.Get on with it.They are leaving Georgia because of the new laws and housing downturn.Thank God.

Agree in spades. But big business wants them though - our senators and reps won’t take them on. Power of the voters?? But all the illegals with their fake ID’s will be voting - can’t ask for their picture so... Re fence - ever been in the interior of Mexico - not the resort areas either. Houses don’t have fences, they have walls!

If he was serious about this, he would sign an Executive Order forcing the SS Administration to give up the data and then he would force his Justice Department to push everything to the Supreme Court.

Bush is just giving Lip Service to the problem!

It might be worth another $100 billion to resettle them back in Mexico. Total Cost $200 billion. Estimated costs of illegals in the USA will run to 1.5 trillion over x years. I don’t recall the exact number. That number was put out a couple months ago.

Put the employers in jail.

Cut off ALL benefits to illegals.

Punish sanctuary cities.

We’;d have a greatly reduced illegal problem just like that.

Then...

Double the number of Border Patrol and ICE agents. Fully fund these agencies.

Fence the entire border.

They can’t get in, there is no reason to come, where are they?

And maybe we can help Pemex get more oil out of the ground (for a cut of course.)

I love one of Savage’s half-joking proposals: oil for illegals. For every illegal that comes to our country, their home country has to give us us a barrel of oil.

Suddenly, the other countries would crack down on teh illegals before they get to be our problem.

...the American president [Bush] for his announcement today that he would propose spending an additional $30 billion over five years to fight AIDS in Africa, doubling the U.S. commitment.

Not a problem at all. Simple extinguish this one program and we're about 1/3rd of the way to paying for it.

There is no need to do that and Bush and every other amnesty pusher knows that.

Build the GD fence you funded.

Start arresting employers of illegals. Real arrests not dog-and-pony photo-op arrests.

Well, will you look at that...our annual foreign aid budget is about $30 billion dollars a year. That's cash handouts to third world countries (you know, those third world countries that our workers are supposed to be competing against?).

Cut that program and we're now 2/3rds of the way there. Wait another year and we're all the way there.

While I agree in principle with you, the court has blocked the SSA from sending these letters, altho they have done it for years!!!!!!!

I see on FR now there is a story about AZ having passed a similar law.

Thank you...that's exactly what I thought. Dry up the reasons why they want to be here (because it flat out ISN'T citizenship) and they will go back on their own.

And...add this: WHY should the Mexicans work for cheap? Why should they be the next slave labor group? They should be insulted, and want to come back legally for a decent wage. grrrrh! It's the soft bigotry of low expectations...hmm...now WHERE have I heard THAT phrase before??? /sarc

What? We’re back to 12M? That figure is at least six years old.

That is the beauty of the USA, I am not limited to those 2 candidates regardless of who wins any or all primaries. Other candidates will be on the ballot thru other legal means and I can always write in a different choice.

If this were not the case, I would have only 1 choice anyways. So the point is mute IMO.

I bet we could put everyone who employs illegals in prison for ten years for a lot less than $100 billion.

Absolutely. If the two major parties give us candidates who will not defend the border, we can simply make another choice.

That’s a government estimate, so the real cost will be at least 3 times that.

If you think of the expenditure by ICE not as an expense against the treasury of the Republic, but instead as an investment in the financial stability of the stressed component systems in the Republic, (Education, Law Enforcement, Welfare, Medicaid, etc), the ROI of this $300 billion dollars would be the best investment the US government has made for the American citizenry since the Marshall plan.

Investing $300 billion of the Social Security trust fund would return a better ROI over the next 5 or 10 years period, than any other investment the trust fund could make towards securing the promised and paid for financial and government services that the Social Security Trust Fund is tasked to perform.

In comparison, the Social Security trust fund brings in only an estimated 3.5% ROI historical average for the last 2 decades. Is there any doubt that compounded over 10 years the removal and guest worker registration of 12 million illegals would bring in a better return for the Baby Boomers?
