Nursing Mom Sues for Extra Exam Ti

NEW YORK — A new mother who wants extra breaks so she can pump milk during a nine-hour medical licensing exam has asked a judge to settle her dispute with the board that administers the test.

Sophie Currier, 33, requested additional break time during the test, saying that if she does not nurse her 4-month-old daughter, Lea, or pump breast milk every two to three hours, she risks medical complications.

The exam allows a total of just 45 minutes in breaks, and the National Board of Medical Examiners has refused to give Currier the extra time she says she needs.

Currier, who lives Brookline, Mass., also has a 22-month-old son, Theo, and has already received special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act for dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

She has been granted permission to take the test over two days instead of one, but is seeking an additional 60-minute break on each day.

Maybe this dyslexic candidate with ADHD should consider a less demanding career than medicine. Maybe something in a library (no offense to librarians -- I like libraries!). She'll probably never get enough accommodations to make her happy. Ever.

She’s trying to milk this ADA thing for every drop.

Oh my...on first skim

"Skim" - ha, ha. As in "skim milk." Very funny...

As if she cant find someone to take care of the rug rat, someone with a bottle of milk standing by. Ever heard of formula? Or perhaps pump it in advance? Liberals...

Is it an open book test or does she have to work from mammary?

This bully sounds MUCH better suited for a career as an attorney than in providing medical services to others.

NOT that attorneys are all bullies...some of my best friends are attorneys....

I've nursed a child and while it's true that missing feedings/pumping sessions can cause problems...this is just one day. Her baby is 4 months old....I'm sure her body can handle a few missed feedings over 9 hours with some expressing to relieve the pressure during her break times.

I'd be more sympathetic if she wasn't already getting the other considerations.

I think the problem is a matter of relieving the pressure from the built up milk. That can be a very serious issue for nursing mothers.

This woman sounds like a nutcase, but she does have a point about the need to feed or at least pump. The issue is not that the kid will starve because milk can be stored, but the supply keeps coming on schedule. There is no "off" switch on production. A nursing mother would be exploding in 9 hours.

OK, I see your point. Having not nursed, and not having the "equipment" to do so, it didn't occur to me. =)

LOL, the mental images on that one.. True, but it's not like she wont get any breaks.

Yeah I was thinking 45 minutes for anyone over 9 hours is rough for anyone. 2 days seems reasonable though. How did she get thru medical school?

I’m surprised the board doesn’t grant her the extra time.

The real issue:

“Currier is feeling added pressure because she already took the test in April, when she was 8 1/2 months pregnant, and failed by a few points.”

Currier has completed a joint M.D.-Ph.D. program at Harvard University while having two babies in the last two years.

Perhaps she should have not tried to do everything at once...

Thank God women can multi-task but sometimes it requires a bit of help from others. If you’ve never nursed, you wouldn’t understand though. The Board encouraged the frivilous suit - would have been much better for everyone to say - okay, you can have 20 minutes extra in the morning and 20 in the afternoon. Not much time but would have been a big help and a compromise that wouldn’t have been a big deal. But they chose to make it a big deal... Guess she could bring the baby to the test and nurse it while she’s taking the test!

More about Sophie Cutter:

“As it is, Currier said, she rushed to have both her children while in medical school.”

“She believed that the heavy, often overnight schedule of residency would be bad for both a pregnant mother and fetus, and she has seen other young female doctors at Harvard hospitals limiting their maternity leave to a month or six weeks because they felt so much pressure to resume their residencies.”

“She did not want to wait until her residency was over to have children, she said, for fear advanced age could bring fertility problems and chromosomal defects.”
