Noted Duke University law professor Erwin Chemerinsky signed a contract to be the dean at the University of California-Irvine's new law school, but was dumped, he said, when the university's chancellor told him he was "too politically controversial." Chemerinsky, a celebrated constitutional law scholar, said Wednesday that Irvine Chancellor Michael Drake flew to Durham from Washington to rescind the job offer face to face. The two met Tuesday at the Sheraton hotel near the Raleigh-Durham airport. "He thought it would be a bloody fight with the Board of Regents," Chemerinsky said.

The professor said he was offered the dean's position Aug. 16 and signed a contract Sept. 4. The job had been contingent on approval by the University of California Board of Regents, which was scheduled to vote next week, Chemerinsky said.

Last year, he was part of the legal team that represented former CIA agent Valerie Plame and her husband, Joseph Wilson, in a civil suit against Vice President Dick Cheney, former Cheney aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby and White House political adviser Karl Rove

"He's also an outspoken commentator who opposes the death penalty and speaks out for civil rights, gay rights and affirmative action."

So he's a leading moonbat. Then this is a good, although extremely unusual, thing.

Legal Affairs magazine named Chemerinsky one of the top 20 legal thinkers in the United States. . . .

He's also an outspoken commentator who opposes the death penalty and speaks out for civil rights, gay rights and affirmative action. . . .

The school is supported by a $20 million donation from California real estate magnate Donald Bren, a major benefactor of the university. Bren is a founder of the New Majority, a group that, according to its Web site, aims to diversify and broaden the appeal of the Republican Party. . . .

Maybe the worm is beginning to turn . . . just a little bit.

This was a shock. I was expecting to read that the guy was too conservative, but in this case it’s the opposite. Sounds like the $20 million grant from the Republican was enough to influence the school that this was not the right guy.

Anyway, this is a step in the right direction. There are WAY too many libs on these college campuses, and their presence just perpetuates more and more liberal through throughout our society.

Don’t know if he was, but the dude is a left wing whack job. Never thought I would see the day that a Duke prof would be sacked before even getting a chance to screw things up like Duke University has. Duke has lost quite a bit of its’ luster lately, and deservedly so!

He’s argued in front of the Supreme Court. I wonder what the far, far left would have said if Mark Levin had been offered the same job.

I had to listen to videotapes of Irwin while taking a course some years ago. His whiny annoying voice was perfect for his weaselly and destructive twisting and warping of Constitutional law.

A very disgusting person in my opinion -- certainly no friend of the Republic.

Agreed. He is a weekly regular on the Hugh Hewitt show. And it is one segment I refuse to listen to. His opinions are predictably anti-American. It is unfortunate, as the same segment also has John Eastman, who is much easier on the ears and patriotism.

Sounds like the $20 million grant from the Republican

Bren is not a Republican. Bren in a founding father of the New Majority of Orange County. A group of well healed, businessman who are interested in gaming the public trough for self interest. Bren is a post partisan moderate who financed Pete Wilson's successful move to install a high profile, public huckster to represent the New Majority's financial interests in the California executive.

It's called "due diligence", folks. #3 google result for his name goes straight to Huffington Post. It's unreasonable to rescind an offer based on such OBVIOUS background information.

They will be lucky if he does not sue.
