Please don't pull the thread. See my post just above Chief Griper Marlowe's. ;)

Marlowe claims she has never seen the "Your Opinion" category on FR, either...to which this thread was posted.

Okay, look: I'll let you rant on--if it makes you feel better, I'll not respond. That way you can think you got the last word in "and really told me", okay? Flame away--I think I've said my piece.

Too late. The damage has been done. There is already a link to this "news story" on another forum. It was listed there as an actual article. It is already in all the search engines.

I'm done here.

A few weeks back, someone posted a link to a video of “What if CNN were around for D-Day”. I enjoy these what-if articles/postings. Thanks.

The book you pointed to denigrates both Dewey and FDR and suggests that FDR was complicit in the attack on Pearl Harbor and that Dewey had to be constrained from leaking information about the Japanese Code; neither of which was true.

By the way, Dewey was not the only politician Marshall saved from blowing a big secret. In 1943, the Senate's Truman Committee, which was dedicated to exposing waste, fraud, and mismanagement in the war effort, was gearing up to investigate two huge industrial complexes, in Tennessee and Washington. At least a billion dollars had gone in, but nothing was coming out. Marshall went to see Senator Truman and said, "I have instructions from the President to ask the Truman Committee to give us the benefit of the doubt on that and not to make any inspection of it. This is a personal request of the President of the United States." [Source]

Of course, those factories did indeed turn out some highly useful gadgets, and two years later, President Truman got to drop two of them on two Japanese cities.
