LOS ANGELES -- As Sen. Hillary Clinton grapples with the burgeoning scandal surrounding disgraced fund-raiser Norman Hsu, she can't quite shake a fund-raising controversy from her 2000 Senate campaign.
Mrs. Clinton's entanglement with a thrice-convicted felon named Peter Paul is proof of how long campaign-finance problems can haunt a public official. Mr. Paul became a problem for Mrs. Clinton when his criminal past became public shortly after he helped organize and finance a gala Hollywood fund-raiser for her in August 2000.

Mr. Paul contends the Clintons obtained the money by falsely promising that Mr. Clinton would become Mr. Paul's business associate after leaving the White House in January 2001. Mr. Paul also maintains that Mrs. Clinton and her campaign violated federal election law in connection with the fund-raiser.

She won’t be indicted or prosecuted, but we hope the civil case and discovery will expose what she has done.

Who has the Rush transcript from Thursday? He mentioned the money spent by Hsu and that no one spends that much money without wanting something. How in the world can lying weasel David Kendall convince anyone that Peter Paul spent $1.6 mil just because he was a true believer? That is insane. No one does that.

I had hoped for a better story, but John has now gotten it out there. When the plaintiff is described as a felon, it might be fair to describe the defendant as a perjurer, suborner of perjury, intimidator of witnesses, and an impeached rapist who lost his law license and turned in a false affidavit to the court.

Yes, Peter was a convicted felon from the late 1970s. You know what he did? He participated in an operation that ripped off Fidel Castro for 8.7 mil. That was a great thing. He would not have had a 10b5 stock manipulation charge had Clinton not destroyed his company.

Hillary’s first two FEC reports for “Event 39” declared $366,000 as the cost. On July 11, 2001, Kendall accepted service of Peter’s lawsuit for Hillary. Included were $1.6 mil of recipts, invoices, and bank statements. Peter’s counsel had a press conference at the National Press Club. Peter had a messenger hand deliver a demand to Hillary’s office. Nevertheless, Hillary filed her third fraudulent FEC report on July 30, 2001.
