I don't know how high you could go for a fairly low grade theft conviction, which is all he's been convicted of in California, before getting into constitutional problems with unreasonable bail. It's not just the theft conviction, it's his demonstrated propensity to become a fugitive from justice. "Flight risk" is a factor in determining the reasonableness of a given bail amount.

Hsu has JUMPED BAIL TWICE and this judge gives him bail AGAIN???? WHO IS THIS JUDGE? Seemingly one who has a price.

"Flight risk" is a factor in determining the reasonableness of a given bail amount. Presumably that's why he got the $5 million. It looks like he's going to waive extradition and not attempt to make bail until he's back in California. Given his history I would think California would want to throw him right in the slammer and start his sentence on the theft conviction.

so whats everybody so upset about?Because if you or I did something that amounted to 1/10th the criminal con game that Hsu has been getting away with for years, they'd toss us in the clink and throw away the key.
Bail? What the heck ever happened to remand?

Hsu has JUMPED BAIL TWICE and this judge gives him bail AGAIN???? WHO IS THIS JUDGE? Seemingly one who has a price.Colorado law requires that bail be set in any non-capital case.
This is the highest bail ever set in this jurisdiction, by a factor of five.
The judge DOES NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY to do what you want him to do.

The judge DOES NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY to do what you want him to do. Even for someone who has already been convicted, and has jumped bail (and skipped out on the sentencing hearing)?
I doubt that.
