Gingrich Thinks No Candidate a Match For the Clinton Machine
Washington Post ^ | Sep 14, 2007 | Dan Balz

Posted on 09/14/2007 6:05:28 PM PDT by indcons

Newt Gingrich, who must wake up each day spewing ideas and dispensing advice, offered a gloomy prognosis today of his party's chances of winning the White House in 2008 and his own prospects of running.

"I believe for any Republican to win in 2008, they have to have a clean break and offer a dramatic, bold change," he said. "If we nominate somebody who has not done that...they're very, very unlikely to win it."

Republicans must break with President Bush and separate themselves from the current state of the political system, he said, and so far none of the current candidates has met that test. But he also made clear that there is now almost no likelihood that he will become a candidate himself, having too little money, too much baggage and too much impatience for a successful campaign.

Gingrich, like many Republicans, believes Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee, and he spoke with some awe of the Clinton machine after remarking on the fact that, on the same day, Bill Clinton was on Oprah and Hillary Clinton was on the Ellen DeGeneres show. "As a professional, I am very, very impressed," he said.

Clinton can be defeated, he said, but only by the kind of campaign that none of the potential nominees is yet running. "None of the Republicans have figured out how to get a routine, repetitive explanation of the future that breaks out of the current situation and that's their primary challenge," he said. "Whoever does that will both, I think, win the nomination and have a realistic chance of defeating Sen. Clinton."

Newt knows what it’s like to lose to the Clinton machine.

I thought Newt was advising Fred. I wonder what Fred thinks Newt saying he is not the quality of a candiate to beat Hillary. Once again Newt proves his time is long past and he is just another media whore that sucks up to democrats and thrashes republicans. Suprised he did not call the republicans pygmies again.

The problem is, Slick Willie’s wife has been handing the GOP opportunities over and over on a silver platter. The testosterone-free Republicans are too stupid to recongize them for what they are.

I’d agree with Newt on this. The ‘R’s have alienated their conservative base to an unprecedented degree. FR mirrors this. Should the ‘R’s tender the usual RINO or mushbag, the krintons will regain the White House.

Gingrich is correct theat the Clinton machine is formidable, but he makes it sound as if Hillary is some kind of unique force never seen before. Hillary has plenty of weaknesses and a good candidate will exploit them.

So, if Newt thinks he is offering something new and different, I sure don't see it...

Personally I think the straight-shooting from Fred will top the cheat/lie/connive!

He’s right, also necessary will be key defections from the Clinton machine...people like Dick Morris who are fed up with the lies and deceit and say: “Enough is enough!”

Hey Newt, a little optimism goes a long way.

Leave the doom and gloom to the Democrats.

Newt is brilliant, but still a spoiled wisacre know-it-all brainiac fat kid with a too-high IQ and no true leadership or manhood.

IMO, the Rs are now concentrating on winning the nomination. The fight against the Ds begins AFTER that happens.

As good a guy as Newt is, he is more concerned these days about getting shelf space at Borders and plugging his book on the national media circuit.

How does this truly help Fred Thompson, who Newt Gingrich is supposed to presently be a political advisor for? I also think that Newt Gingrich really wants to run for the ‘08 Presidency, but he also knows that his negative personal baggage alone is enough to seriously sink his chances for victory.
