I really, really like Steyn, but reading his columns does make me mourn for Michael Kelly.
If only he hadn't died in Iraq!! What a gifted writer/author/raconteur he was.
"I understand why some dislike the idea, and fear the ramifications of, America as a liberator. But I do not understand why they do not see that anything is better than life with your face under the boot. And that any rescue of a people under the boot (be they Afghan, Kuwaiti or Iraqi) is something to be desired. Even if the rescue is less than perfectly realized. Even if the rescuer is a great, overmuscled, bossy, selfish oaf. Or would you, for yourself, choose the boot?" http://www.poynter.org/content/content_view.asp?id=28541

Pat O'Rourke wrote his latest book,
Peace Kills, in Kelly's memory.
"He could have advocated the war in Iraq without going to cover it. he could have covered it without putting himself in harm's way. But liberty is an expensive feast. And Mike was a man who always picked up the check."
