Boise Vineyard Christian Fellowship Pastor Tri Robinson broke down the barriers for his evangelical Christian congregation two years ago by making it OK to express environmental values as a part of their faith.
Now, he's helping environmentalists break through the walls between their core values and their faith.
A year after Robinson was featured on Bill Moyer's PBS special "Is God Green?" the Vineyard Christian Fellowship has become a model for evangelical environmentalism at the local level.
Church members recycle. They feed Boise's poor from their organic garden. They are learning how bringing simplicity to their lives can be more rewarding and help them live a Christian life. And their ministry is catching on nationwide.
"We got hundreds of e-mails after that saying we've just been waiting for this to happen in Christianity," Robinson said.

While I think I agree God would probably want us to care for His creation, I'm not sure that environmentalism should be wrapped up in Church.
“Boise Vineyard Christian Fellowship Pastor Tri Robinson broke down the barriers for his evangelical Christian congregation two years ago by making it OK to express environmental values as a part of their faith.”
What is that supposed to mean? I guess anybody who sets foot in a church is an “evangelical” now.
“Environmental values”? Huh?
environmmental whackos aren’t christians.
God created the earth, so He’s kind of an environmentalist.
Revelation 11:18
The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great and for destroying those who destroy the earth.
Return of the Old Gods: A Challenge to Green Evangelicals
The evangelical leaders may mean well, but they are unaware of the history of environmentalism.
Care for creation, yes. Serve it? NO.
"If people know Jesus they'll vote right," Robinson said. "They'll have compassion and mercy and care about the world around them."
So far, so good. It would be interesting to know more about this. Balance is everything.
Finally a story for the Idaho ping list that doesn’t involve Larry Craig!!
Gaia is pleased.
The idea that man is to act as God’s steward on the earth, and care for His creations, is biblical. Concern for the environment is ancient, in both Judaism and Christianity.
But the particular twist put on “environmentalism” by the leftist whackos who run most of the environmental organizations since the 60s twists that ancient concern out of all recognition.
Historically, conservatives have always been concerned about preserving nature and the environment. But that doesn’t mean the kind of distorted approach represented by Al Gore, the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, or most of the other envirowhackos.
The best thing for conservatives to do is to try to take back these organizations, which didn’t use to be so extremist in the past, or to educate people to understand the difference between real concern for nature and far-out leftist stupidity. It’s not merely coincidence that Communist countries are invariably the world’s worst polluters, even as they mouth the party line.
I suspect that this pastor is a whacko, but it would need a closer look to be sure.
Ugh. He's in Al Gore's thought-sphere.
He's got it wrong..."protection" is not mentioned. God told man to have "dominion" over the earth. These enviro-wackos allow the earth to take dominion over them.
he argues against an emphasis on materialistic lifestyles that are contributing to inequities around the world, he said.
Yup. The Karl Marx theory. Don't be fooled...these believes always morph into socialism. They veer toward earth and temporal matters and away from eternal matters and care of men's souls.
And who is to decide what constitutes "destroying the Earth?" where does God say that we can't drive SUVs or that we MUST recycle?
This passage is often misquoted by environmentalists. The destruction of earth in view here has nothing to do with the environment. It has to do with the idolatrous and rebellious inhabitants of the world whose actions bring about destruction as a result of God’s judgment. Modern environmental extremists are actually idolators, who reverence the creation more than the Creator.
Taking care of creation? No problem.
Buying into “environmentalism”? You're a simpleton that’s being co opted by your enemies.
Didn’t Jesus say, “Go, and save the Earth!”
I would suppose God decides that. Obviously, He doesn’t say that we can’t drive SUVs or that we MUST recycle. He just expects good stewardship over the planet.
God isn’t an envirowhacko, He created this earth for OUR benefit. And He gave us dominion over animals. If we violate that trust, there will be a price to pay.
I think it should NOT be woven into Christianity.
We went to a Vineyard up in Boise — might be a different one, but I believe it was the one that had little coffee tables and chairs IN the sanctuary, so you could sit and drink your lattes while you worshipped the Lord.
Not my mo.
That is it! An idealogical Trojan Horse. Thanks for giving words to my thots.
