I'm disgusted that Bush is being dictated to by the Socialists/Liberal Elitists, but sense that this would not happen without a quid-pro-quo. What was exchanged (conceded) by the Dim's that won't be made public?

Or, worst case, is this lame-duck Presidnet going to bend over and grab his ankles everytime one of the Dim's wants to make a political "statement"?????

My fear is that the latter is the case.

It is one thing to pick one's battles carefully. It is quite another to flee the battlefield in terror, while frenetically hoisting the white flag, as it appears President Bush has done here. (The metaphor is not necessarily mixed, but does require a bit of imagination.)

Since Congress's approval rating is about 15 points lower than the president's--and the Senate is, after all, one chamber of Congress--it makes no sense at all to me that the president would suppose that he could not win a confrontation with either chamber of Congress.

Appeasement is no more becoming here than it is in international relations.

Well, Bush seems able and willing to confront the Republican Base re. Amnesty on a regular basis.
