VICTORIA, New Zealand and US police are involved in the search for the parents of 'Pumpkin', the little girl abandoned at a Melbourne train station.
New Zealand police hold grave fears for the mother, Annie Xue, also known as Anan Liu, who has not been heard from. Pumpkin's father, New Zealand magazine publisher, Nai Xin Xue, flew to the US two hours after dumping his daughter at Southern Cross Railway Station on Saturday morning.
"There are concerns we haven't heard from her at all," head of Auckland CIB, Detective Inspector Dave Pearson, told NZPA.
He would not say if police thought the woman had been killed.
"You can jump to all sorts of conclusions but there are concerns we haven't heard from her, so yes, the inquiry is being ramped up considerably," he said.
Victoria Police Inspector Brad Shallies said today the girl's 54-year-old father was already known to New Zealand police.
It was reported today the family had been investigated by New Zealand's child protection services in the past.
"We are still acting under the belief mum is in New Zealand," Inspector Shallies told Channel 9.
"We believe her father had travelled from Melbourne to the US on Saturday morning but we have not been in touch with him."
Insp Shallies said Victoria Police were working with police in the US and New Zealand to track down Pumpkin's parents.

Pumpkin's father identified
The toddler dumped at Melbourne's Southern Cross railway station at the weekend is the daughter of a New Zealand magazine publisher and his wife.
Publisher Nai Xin Xue, 54, is believed to have left his daughter, Qian Xun Xue, three, at the railway station on Saturday, Fairfax reported.
Friends of the family said Xue and his wife, Annie Xue, had separated, but they had reconciled.
Auckland police are trying to find Mrs Xue.
His daughter, dubbed Pumpkin for the brand of clothes she was wearing, was left on a platform of the station, where she was found by security guards. She is being care for by a foster family in Melbourne.
Xue publishes New Zealand's Chinese-language Chinese Times magazine, a friend said.
"I heard he is not quite a happy man at this stage. He feels a loss of interest in business and family, very depressed," the friend told Fairfax. "It could be that he feels no hope, that the family is not very happy."
Mrs Xue left her husband about three months ago with their daughter but they reconciled a month ago, the friend said.
"I think he solved the problem so his wife came back. He went to Wellington to pick up his wife and child and go back to Auckland," the friend said.
"Quite a few of us went to a meeting there for people from the same hometown. At that time only he was there, but after a few days he got his wife and child back."
The friend said he last saw Xue in Auckland on Thursday, the day he flew to Australia with his daughter.
Xue bought a return ticket to LA on Friday at a travel agency and left Melbourne on Saturday, about three hours after he left his daughter.
On Monday, Victoria Police Inspector Brad Shallies said security camera footage at the station shows the father leading his daughter onto the platform, then turning and taking an escalator, wheeling a suitcase behind him.
"Our belief is that he has left Australia and may now be in the United States," Insp Shallies said.
The girl, nicknamed Pumpkin after the brand of clothing she was wearing, is in the care of a foster family in Melbourne.
She has been laughing at children's DVDs, but also asking for her mother.
The friend said he had tried unsuccessfully to contact Xue, who emigrated from China to New Zealand 10 years ago.
The Xues lived in a weatherboard house in the Auckland suburb of Mount Roskill, which was empty on Monday and had mail spilling from the letterbox, the report said.

Sounds like he flew to Los Angeles...but could have moved on. Very few stories on this guy, no American ones, no pics of the father.

National MP Pansy Wong, said Mr Xue was an active member of the Chinese community and described his wife as a very private person.

She was believed to have been an international student in New Zealand about five years ago when she met Mr Xue.

The father is believed to have got off a plane in Los Angeles and American authorities had been alerted, Mr Shallies said. The Herald Sun reported his flight from Melbourne to LA went via Auckland.
