So did Howie really neglect to nail down the
enforceability of his non-compete agreement
long before before heading for the door?

These sorts of terms are common in the media
and entertainment industries, and by now it
should be well known how they’ll stand up in
court.

Who knows. Supposedly they said the non-compete is
illegal in this state, though.
It’s possible that Howie may wind up starting his show
on WTKK and Entercom would then ask for a restraining order
which, if upheld, would mean a temporary “benching”
of him ‘till it’s settled.
