Democrats Won't Temper Iraq Legislation

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- After weeks of suggesting Democrats would temper their approach to Iraq legislation in a bid to attract more Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared abruptly Tuesday that he had no plans to do so.

The Democratic leader said he will call for a vote this month on several anti-war proposals, including one by Sen. Carl Levin that would insist President Bush end U.S. combat next summer. The proposals would be mandatory and not leave Bush wiggle room, said Reid, D-Nev.

"There (are) no goals. It's all definite timelines," he told reporters of the planned legislation.

Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Monday night he would have agreed to turn the summer deadline into a nonbinding goal if doing so meant attracting enough votes to pass.

Good idea. If the Dems hold the military hostage, we can do the same to their sacred social spending programs. Turnabout would indeed be fair play.

This is a smart strategy by Reid. He knows that, as long as the left wing is onboard, the Democrats will have HUGE gains in the House and Senate next year. They will also see a Democrat president swept to power, too. So, he is going ahead with these measures. He knows that the Republicans will block them and then he will blame them for doing so, which will help Democrats in next year’s election.

This is a tremendous partisan strategy for the Dems...it will give them total power after the 2008 elections. I wonder how badly that will hurt the future of the USA, though.

Harry Reid is without any doubt one of the worst traitors and despicable characters in US political history, but fortunately he is also one of the dumbest and most delusional. The man keeps repeating the same stupid treasonous tactics that were crushed before by the President even when the situation in Iraq was much worse. Now that the situation in Iraq is much better and that we are on the verge of annihilating Al Qaeda it is impossible for this traitor to get his way.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The Democrats can't get anything done. The reality is they're the ones being polarizing and divisive. Its a risky gamble and blaming the other side might turn out to be the political equivalent of "the dog ate my homework." Thus, it remains to be seen whether the voters will buy that excuse.

Yep Harry Reid is a genius (extreme sarcasm). The man is a traitor and an idiot. He is a slave for the left wing lunatics like moveon.org and their ultimate master George Soros. How smart a man can be when a lunatic on the internet gives him orders and he abides by it? I always wonder why some people on our side see defeated democrats as victorious and stupid liberals as geniuses.

Dingy Harry should redeploy to Okinawa as soon as possible.

Only a Democrat could slam the door several times in his own face and declare it feels wonderful! Dingy Harry and his sorry crew are a bunch of masochists with a built-up tolerance to political pain.

I disagree.

Its a boneheaded strategy. It depends entirely on a steady flow of bad news from Iraq, an isolated America and no other evidence of a threat to the US. It is bound to collapse, leaving the democrats as the weak-on-defense party.

The progress in Iraq is far better than what trickles out of the MSM. In the next year it will continue to come out. Secondly, there are reports that Syrians died while trying to mount a chemical warhead on a scud (Where did that come from?) Third, a more conservative France is pushing for action against Iran.

Not only could President Bush shut the government down, but because of the Presidential Obligations to protect the US he could have the AG sign a budget insolvency affidavit thus allowing President Bush to go to the treasury and get the money for essential program including defense and all current operations for defense.

Agree 100%. I thought that extreme delusions is a decease that only inflicts Arabs, I was wrong. I see that the vast majority of liberals suffer from it. They always see themselves all powerful and victorious when in reality they are impotent and defeated.

Thanks for posting this.

We also might want to remind the impatient that it took nearly 500 years for English parliamentary democracy to assume something resembling its present shape. Along the way, a considerable amount of bloodshed was required (especially at the end) to secure the rights of free Englishmen and, by extension, free Americans, Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders.

Thank God they had more spine than the Democrats (and their fellow traveler RINOs) do!

I saw a report on the internet that Rasmussen has Jean Shaheen leading John Sununu by 48% to 43% (NH Senate). Thats bad!!! Also, Dick Morris thinks the Republicans will be down to only 42 or 43 Senators after the 2008 election. It will be hard to stop Democrat legislation with so few Republican Senators...you know that Collins, Snowe, McCain and Specter will be happy to compromise with Dems.

This is a bad situation...I don’t know who is responsible, but we are all going to pay a price when the Dems take over.

The Democrats are isolating themselves politically. If the news gets better AND our troops start coming home by next summer, that will take the wind out of the sails of the anti-war movement. Then the Democrats will have to push ahead with Hillary's socialized health care scheme dominating the news. I don't want to be a Democrat if I can't run against Bush - and he will NOT be on the ballot next year.

Its 14 months. And that's an eternity in politics. There will be a lot of events between now and next November that will shape the 2008 election. Right now - it does look good for the Democrats. By next summer - who knows?

I hope that you are right...but the Media seems to control all of the news that comes out of Iraq and just doesn’t seem to let any of the good news out. I hate to be so negative about next year’s election but I feel more depressed now than I did after the 2006 election.

So Democrat mouthpiece. Riddle me this. IF the Democrat stategy is SO brilliant? Why have they run their approval number from 50% to 14% is the last 8 months?

They did ONE thing in that time. Fought with Bush on Iraq. Bush’s approval is back up to 40%, they are down to 3% approval on Iraq. So just who is winning the PR war here hmmm?

So just WHERE to you expect these “huge gains” to come from? The 58 Democrats who represent districts that voted more the 51% for GW Bush in 2004? You may just lose 50 seats next year the way you people are acting in DC.

But keep screaming the Moveon.org dogma , wouldn’t want anything like FACT or REALITY to penetrate your welded shut mind now would you?

I believe the smart Dems have already switched campaign focus from the war to “wait for it” health care. It is beyond me why a competitive party feels that selling insurance to Americans is a winning political strategy. It has been my experience the moment someone starts talking about insurance plans everybody’s eyes glaze over. My bet is neither health care insurance nor surrender to AQ is going motivate any new block of voters to the Dem cause. Their brillance last election (remember well) was to pose as conservative Dems. Their actions to date have destroyed that gambit for 2008. So we are back to future and Dems will sell insurance plans to Americans (at higher prices). Repubs will sell national defense and lower taxes. Let me guess which offer will succeed? Not hard folks.
