The banking system in America is underwritten by the government in the form of FDIC, a corporation formed by the government in 1933.

I’m not sure there is much of a difference, except in perception, between what we have and what Britain has done. They probably ought to set up something similar to our FDIC, have the banks fund it via premium payments and put to rest the anxieties of the average saver.
