That was the situation when John Stuart Mill mentioned that all the stupid people he knew where conservatives. In his day, they held many of the same positions as modern day Liberals.

In Australia:
The National Country Party is conservative.
The Liberal Party is moderately conservative.
Those two parties form the Coalition which forms the current government.
The Labor Party is liberal to socialist. It is the main opposition party.
