The correct approach! We home school as well (25 year veterans at it). We can’t help but wonder how soon it will be before doctors are told that they MUST vaccinate. How long will it be before doctors are told by government that they must deny service altogether to families who will not take all the vaccines that government requires. Or, how long will it be before doctors are required by law to turn in the names of families who refuse to receive these vaccines and other government mandated procedures, too.

You are right to be skeptical of the hysterical quality of the article. Five deaths out of probably millions of doses is not a significant risk. Nevertheless, the professed "need" for this vaccine assumes promiscuity--with appropriate behavior, the spread of HPV and lots of other ugly bugs would be stopped in their tracks. Furthermore, if you are really in the business, you know that there are many strains of HPV which are essentially harmless and only a select few which advance the risk factor for cervical CA.

IOW the jury is still out on this vaccine.

Well,if you work in the pharmaceutical industry,you should know that the vaccine may prevent 70% of cervical cancers. I have heard or read nothing that indicates uterine cancer is affected at all. Where did you get that idea?

Cervical cancer causes about 3,500 deaths a year and the cervix is not a major site of probable fatal cancers. Additionally,timely pap smears could prevent almost all of the deaths that do occur. Furthermore,pap smears will still be necessary.

The vaccine has not been tested long enough to have the foggiest notion of the long term effects it may have on the girls receiving it or any children they may have.

The misinformation and disinformation on this vaccine is very disturbing and should make the public very suspicious of Merck as well as the vaccine.

Upon the Gov’s making the vaccine mandatory in Texas, I called my state rep as expressed my extreme displeasure over the decree that all 9 year olds be vaccinated. He replied that he had not heard any objection. I told him that there were a lot of objectors to this mandate and come election time we will remember what action the lege took. I urged everyone I knew to call and I guess we got thru to them as they overruled the Gov.

My mother was offered Thalidomide when she was pregnant with me.

I had a classmate whose mother took Thalidomide. His upper left arm was short. His lower left arm was essentially missing. He had a tiny hand dangling at the end of his left elbow. His right arm was completely unaffected.

My mom was likewise offered Thalidomide. I think she turned it down. I arrived with what was termed a "severe tibial torsion". Both feet were turned inward. An orthopedic surgeon "fixed" the problem by breaking both of my legs and putting me in some odd contraption that held my feet and legs in a "normal" position until the breaks healed. Had that not been done, I would not be able to walk today. I'm flat footed, but I can walk and run to some degree. Inline speedskating isn't problem...except for a pair of lungs damaged by pneumonia and Valley Fever.

My family doc (the one my girls see) is not for it at all - especially for girls entering puberty. In her opinion, the research relied too much on subjects passed puberty. She says my 2 (17 and 20) are old enough, but she would prefer both of them wait until they are 21. That also assumes that they both restrain from sex until that time. Someone sexually active doesn't benefit from this in the least. Both my girls have promised me they are not and have not been active and I believe them.

So I'm thinking this summer for the older and a long, serious talk with the younger. This strikes me as more reasonable than giving this to a 9-12 year old.

Do your own research -- most doctors know frighteningly little about vaxes. They've all (regardless of specialty) had the same 1-day training in med school (basically a recitation of the pharma-friendly CDC "Parent Pages) and most won't even know the ingredients listed on the package insert.

GARDASIL* is a non-infectious recombinant, quadrivalent vaccine prepared from the highly purified virus-like particles (VLPs) of the major capsid (L1) protein of HPV Types 6, 11, 16, and 18.

It was noted in the trials that in women already infected with strain 16 or 18, the vaccine actually caused lesions. This concern was not mentioned again after approval.

You could still develop cancer from any of the other 30 or so strains that can lead to cervical cancer. Understanding of course that it is very rare for any HPV infection to lead to cervical cancer, particularly with regular pap screenings. There are over 100 types of HPV.

Dr. Nancy Miller of the FDA, who was on the Gardasil review committee, said Gardasil does not necessarily protect against one or more of the four viruses in people already infected before they get the vaccine, and can increase their risk for precursors to cervical cancer.

In addition, the FDA staff highlighted five cases where children with birth defects were born to women who received the vaccine around the time of conception.

Most women who catch the virus clear it just fine, and are immune for life. Most women who catch it do so when they're fairly young, too.

So if the vax immunity wears off when you're 40 or 50, and you catch it at that time, your chances of clearing it without incident might be smaller.

HPV also causes genital warts (condyloma acuminata) which are growths of the cervicovaginal, vulvar, and the external genitalia that rarely progress to cancer.

HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18 are common HPV types.

HPV 16 and 18 cause approximately:
• 70% of cervical cancer, AIS, CIN 3, VIN 2/3, and VaIN 2/3 cases; and
• 50% of CIN 2 cases.


HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18 cause approximately:
• 35 to 50% of all CIN 1, VIN 1, and VaIN 1 cases; and
• 90% of genital wart cases.

At least your girls are old enough to make a decision on their own.

At 10, I really can’t have a discussion with my girls about the risks vs benefits of the vaccine. At 14, maybe. 16 gets a little better. 18, they better be ready to make important decisions about their own life.

I also figure it depends on the kid. I know my 13 year old is not having sex. He is too shy in front of girls, plus he doesn’t have the opportunity (unless it is at school).

At 16 when kids can drive and be on their own, that’s when I’ll be concerned about them having sex.
