Dallas' road projects have failed to keep up with growth, officials say, causing rush-hour duration to more than double, from 2.9 hours in 1982 to 7.6 in 2005. MELANIE BURFORD/DMN Dallas' road projects have failed to keep up with growth, officials say, causing rush-hour duration to more than double, from 2.9 hours in 1982 to 7.6 in 2005.

Rush hour keeps getting longer for drivers in Dallas, where a new study says traffic delays are among the worst in the nation. And it's not likely to get any better soon.

Drivers here lose 58 hours a year in stalled traffic, making the Dallas-Fort Worth area the fifth-worst in the U.S. for traffic delays, according to Tuesday's report by the Texas Transportation Institute.

"This data shows we're not building our projects fast enough," said Michael Morris, transportation director for the North Central Texas Council of Governments. "We've been caught up on a couple big projects in the past few years that we just couldn't get across the finish line. That's going to change."

Houston and Austin also fared poorly – with Austin traffic ranked worst among midsize cities and Houston the nation's seventh-worst for time spent in traffic jams.

The 58 hours rush-hour drivers spend stuck in Dallas-area traffic is nearly a sixfold increase since 1982, when the study began. No other urban area in America has seen traffic get worse faster than Dallas-Fort Worth.

After living appx. 10 months in Dallas, I don't think the traffic is that bad. There really is not a morning rush hour, but one does have to avoid the Stemmons southbound between 4 and 7 in the afternoon and early evening. The rush hour traffic in Pittsburgh is on par with Dallas's, IMO.

Anyway the reason I put immigration keywords in is because I can predict the knee jerk answers from the pitchfork crowd on FR, saying "it's the illegals fault", yada, yada, yada.

That may be true since I see tons of trucks driven by hispanics carrying lawnmowers and lumber and such as they try to build wealth.

I guess some on FR would rather have us all live like the homeless people who stand on the corners or hang out at gas stations of major intersections in Dallas begging for money. BTW by my estimation, 98% of the beggars are either white or black. There is one guy who is white who hangs out at the corner of Mockingbird and Stemmons, who actually parks his car in a neighboring parking lot from where I work.

But I guess I am digressing and bloviating hot air to some on FR, who would rather condemn those creating wealth rather than those who sponge off wealth.

The LA papers today say that Los Angelenos spend 72 hours a year stuck in traffic. I believe it!

Sounds more like a taunt or an invitation.

Just following the protocol of the pitchforkers on FR.

Tar and feather me for that.

I don’t tar feather folks and I’m not a pitchforker. Just felt you shoulda waited for the anticipated responses and replied appropriately.

BTW, my initial response to this thread would have been sometning like I drive a gas guzler, but live a 1/2 mile from my office.

Anyone who chooses to slander and negatively characterize their opposition on an issue right out of the box as you have done is employing a lousy debating technique that generally just shows how weak their position on the issue actually is.

If you want to have an honest discussion about the illegal alien issue and its impact on society why don’t you just stick to facts and assertions and leave the name calling to the grade-schoolers.

Oh please. don't patronize me. Come to Dallas and get gas at any gas station along a major freeway and by my experience a black guy will come up to you asking for money, while the hispanic ones are loading up their gas tanks to get to their next job.

A question, who is more honorable. The black guy begging or the hispanic guy paying for his gas.

The DFW are has some serious traffic woes, largely due to TXDOTs poor planning.

The new work that was done in Dallas has helped a great deal, but I’m sure glad I rarely have to drive over there

BTW, I wouldn’t put it past you guys at pat buchanan central putting a bulletin out, saying, “hey we need more hispanic beggars out there, give them $50 a day. If it works for jesse jackson, it can work for us”.

Apparently I was too obtuse, or you just didn't get it.

My comments were not about the race of any individuals, just your approach of immediately calling somebody you disagree with names.

Illegals don't need to beg on street corners. There exists an extensive network of advocates that coach them and help sign them up for every freebie that we offer.

Oh, you mean the Hispanic that committed a misdemeanor breaking into our country illegally, and then committed felonies getting his false ID, using his false ID to gain employment, and/or getting medical help? Is that the Hispanic you are talking about?

As long as they are contemptuous of our laws they have no honor!

jeez 58 hours, how much is that each day? I quess about 25 minutes a day - 12 minutes in the morning and 13 at night - not much. So what. We have nice weather, good radio stations and plenty of great roads - most under construction. Life is ment to be enjoyed so what if it is on the highway of life.

with Austin traffic ranked worst among midsize cities

I can believe this. The biggest problem in this area is the non synchronized traffic lights. What ever happened to that multi million dollar initiative to synchronize all the lights?

Do you even realize how racist you sound?!? "Gotta watch out for those coloreds at the gas station." Good Lord.

That would help but the big problem is that we add 500 households per week while we aren’t even close to adding that much asphalt.
