One can be truly brilliant and one can be right and one can be an amazing orator but if you can not connect with the average normal voter you are toast.

Bingo. The key to being a good politician is the ability to work with others, who don't agree with you, to get things done. Reagan was the master at that.

Certainly, one must know how to get along with people. But, there is a line that should not be crossed. If it is, the only things that "get done" are in the advancement of the liberal agenda, not ours.

RINOs cross that line all the time. True conservative statesmen do not.

Margaret Thatcher:

"If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing."

"I seem to smell the stench of appeasement in the air."

"There are still people in my party who believe in consensus politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors... I mean it."

"To me, consensus seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects."
