A woman who walked into Logan International Airport allegedly wearing a fake bomb strapped to chest was arrested at gunpoint Friday, officials said.
Star Simpson, 19, had a computer circuit board, wiring and a putty that later turned out to be Play-Doh in plain view over a black hooded sweatshirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport.
After a Massachusetts Port Authority official notified State Police about 8 a.m., troopers tracked Simpson down outside Terminal C, where they arrested her and later determined the device was a fake.

This is Boston- if the computer board had an LED picture of Mooninites, the cops would have fired at once even if she’d been in a crowd.
But they gave her the benefit of the doubt. They probably had to arrange the encounter so that there were no people within 20 meters, in case the play-doh was actually C4, and once you have the target isolated, you have the luxury of some conversation before you decide to take a life.

Every time a dumbass pilot enters DC airspace, he’s “escorted” out by an F-16. Usually, though, the F-16 flies along-side while the aircraft approaches the White House. Too little, too late.

Everyone’s assuming that she is a protester, but that’s not clear from the article or other information here.
Odds are that she is. But like other MIT students, she also seems to be a nerd, with a fondness for racing machines and the like.
Yes, this was an extremely stupid thing to do. But why she was stupid enough to do it remains to be seen. I’m sure her IQ is off the charts, but sometimes smart young people can do some pretty stupid things.
She'll now be able to add a new word to her list of accomplishments: criminal.
The self-descriptive text and pictures at her web page makes her sound like an intelligent but goofy kid. Giving her a massive benefit of doubt for youthful immaturity, my sense is that the "device" was probably was meant to be a joke on the friend she was picking up.
Guess she failed to notice that jokes of this type are out in the age of terrorism. She's damn lucky, damn lucky not to be dead.
