Definitely not the Cicada Killer. .
That’s it! How did you find it? I did a FR search for snake and found enough threads to give me nightmares for the rest of my life...
Or just a wannaBEE!
I searched on ‘snake’ and ‘identify’
You got that right! LOL But, it definitely is NOT a Carpenter Bee. We have those too and this one isn't fat or slow.
Well if it really tries to charge you a fee don’t pay it! If you do you’ll never get rid of it and it will probably call it’s friends!
It’s not a cicada killer, the markings and other indicators are quite different.
Yours is the European Hornet. Google “Vespa crabro” and look at the images. You’ll notice the very distinctive “v” at the top of the abdomen, with the 2 rows of dashes, and the red thorax. Just leave it alone and it will leave you alone. They are no more venomous than a regular bee, in fact less so since they don’t leave the stinger in you like a bee.
That’s a hornet, which you probably know by now. You’ve likely got a nest in your house, so call the exterminator pronto!
But she’s a beauty! But you have to evict her and her clan, I’m afraid.
I understand.. ;-)
Cheese-making bees! You really got something there! Most of them just do honey and wax.
I painted a house once and used a wasp spray whose active ingredient was peppermint oil. It smelled wonderful and was 100% non-toxic to humans. It cost twice as much but worked great — killed the wasps almost instantly. I was amazed.
Thanks.. . I like that better than the Asian variety.
Not what I wanted to hear, but I will let the other half know... as he has now been pinged to this thread...
I was kind of worried about that. If there is one, there are more than likely more than that!
Hmmm... I’ll have to put out the candy canes early then!
Off to bed.. .
I will never cease to be amazed at the knowledge of FReepers!
Ken-— Ready for the Hillary offensive???????
Definately a European Hornet. Wikipedia says that they are attracted to lights at night.

And lets not forget this one

PS how do I post a pic (assuming this doesn’t come through)?
My introduction to those same hornets went as follows...
Mr G heads towards the bathroom, but doesn’t stay there. He walks past me and into the bedroom. Several minutes later he walks back past me towards the bathroom... however, he is now wearing a motorcycle helmet, a leather jacket zipped to the neck and at the wrists, a pair of motorcycle gloves and he is carrying a mop and a can of long range wasp spray.
Me. What are you doing?
him. Going to the bathroom
me. Why are you dressed like that?
him. There is a bug in the bathroom.
me. A bug?
him. Yes. I don’t know what it is but it sounds like a B52 and it is casting a very large shadow on the shower curtain.
He proceeds to the bathroom hall. He stands in the hall and reaches in to move the shower curtain with the mop. He then kills the giant hornet with the long range wasp spray.
That thing was at least 2” long and looked like it would knock over a horse. However, since we moved here 21 years ago we have seen many more of them and we have never been hurt or even threatened by one.
