Daily Kos: General Petraeus Wore Fraudulent Medal
Via OrbusMax.com - Little Green Footballs ^ | 9/21/07

Tonight at Daily Kos, the new mainstream voice of the Democratic Party, they’ve found a new angle from which to attack General Petraeus: Hey, MoveOn! Petraeus Wore Fraud Medal At Testimony.

Examining General Petraeus’s medals, his official bios and then comparing three reports of events on 3/30/2003 in Najaf, Iraq - two by prize-winning embedded journalists and one understood to be by Army personnel (which document this diarist will produce to a responsible party at any time) - this diarist cannot conclude other than that General David Petraeus wore a medal for combat valor in his testimony before Congress that was a sham, propaganda and a dishonor to his troops and nation.

I will be extremely surprised if there is anything to these charges, but it’s not my area of expertise, so LGF military lizards—please weigh in.

He had to know his fruit salad would go under a microscope. I guarantee

A.) He has valid orders for every ribbon or
B.) he’s a total fool.

I’m betting on A.

YEP. that's why i "just knew" he was a FRAUD.

REAL heroes/heroines hardly EVER "mention", much less BRAG about their medals.

when i was one of the students at the USAIS (popularly known as: the benning school for boys), one of our "distinguished speakers" was MAJ Roger Donolon (MOH, RVN), who said, "What i did was no big deal. at least a THOUSAND GIs did more than me." (emphasis: MINE)

also, i was (until his untimely passing) a close friend of Joseph O. Berry, late member-in-good-standing of Merrill's Marauders.

Joe NEVER even talked about hr war, except to tell us about the FUNNY things that happened to him. (for example the day that he sat down on a KRAIT. Joe said, "didn't know i could jump THAT high!!!")

It is not possible since the award was only created in 2005. It is probably deserved, but I do feel entitled to wonder whether it is or not given that I know several junior soldiers who have had the award denied due to minor reasons.

I believe that the issue is whether the Bronze Star awarded includes the "V" for valor distinction. One of the men I served with years ago was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. There was not act of valor involving enemy action, though the service was in a combat area.

It is impossible for him to have earned it before he became a General officer as it was only created in 2005. Others have clarified the regulation regarding this, but I am feel compelled to call it into question since I know many other soldiers whose CAB was denied due to trivial reasons.

I suspect that Patraeus won his Bronze star with a "V" during the Gulf War.

Kos is saying he received it with the 101st in 2003-2004. If he has received the V device for a mortar round that struck near him, then it's a slap in the face to all of those who have been through lots more and have shown a lot more valor.

The “...personally present and actively engaging or being engaged by the enemy, and performing satisfactorily in accordance with the prescribed rules of engagement” would seem to me to require that the person being awarded to have been under fire and engaging the enemy. Something generals don’t often do.

We got issued our Good Conduct Medals at Oakland at DEROS and ETS. They gave us some french fries too. They were out of steak. We were two year guys.

Long ago... far away.

the 6th word in the last sentence of my last post should be "his", rather than "hr".

btw, i HAVE to tell you HOW Joe said that he was recruited into the Marauders.

Joe said:

"i was sitting under a tree in the pouring rain on this little-@ss, no place, island trying to eat my "ks" before the rain filled up my mess-kit & washed the slop away.

this fellow tapped me on the shoulder & said, "we are eating BIG STEAKS at our camp."

i asked him WHO i had to kill to get one of them steaks.

he said, "a whole bunch of Japs."

i said,"i can do that"

. LOTS of GIs became Marauders in JUST that way."

btw, Joe said that the STEAKS were REALLY GOOD, too.

Some of the guys I drill with were wondering about his CAB (Combat Action Badge) as combat badges are not generally awarded to General officers.

So, you and the guys you drill with think he was always a general? You think he might have earned it before he got his first star? WTF.

The CAB has only been awarded for the last 2 or 3 years. Long after Petraeus made general.

The award is retro to 2001 and it is awarded to “any soldier”, which would include generals I imagine.

http://www.army.mil/symbols/combatbadges/Action.html

“In 2003, Petraeus, then a major general, commanded the 101st Airborne Division during V Corps’s drive to Baghdad. In a campaign chronicled in detail by Rick Atkinson of the Washington Post’s book In the Company of Soldiers, Petraeus led his division through the battles of Karbala, Hilla, and Najaf (where he came under fire during an ambush by Iraqi paramilitary forces).”

From the Wikipedia link someone had posted in this thread.

As commander of the 101st Airborne, Petraeus saw combat for the first time during the division’s drive up the Euphrates Valley, with sharp firefights in Najaf, Karbala and Hilla. But it was during the division’s subsequent occupation of Mosul and northern Iraq that he won widespread acclaim by resurrecting the local economy, restoring services and preserving order with strategic force, which included killing Saddam Hussein’s two sons. Posters in the division bivouacs read: “What have you done to win Iraqi hearts and minds today?”
