This is april15 father chiming in on his account. I am proud that he picked such a great topic.

It is a shame that it took 55 years to finally tell the exploits of the 6th Ranger Battalion and the Great Raid. Many thanks to Author Hampton Sides for a wonderful history lesson.

Another point of history. If you ever saw the movie "Back to Bataan" with John Wayne and Anthony Quinn, the Cabanatuan raid started the movie and the end featured a number of real former Philippine POWs with their names and home towns.

Old Movie Trivia Tie-In #1:

At the end of the 1945 John Wayne flick, Back to Bataan, eight of the survivors of Cabanatuan are actually seen briefly in close-up and identified by name as they re- create their march away from the POW camp for the Hollywood camera. They are identified as:

Jesus Santos
George Greene (spelled Green in Sides' book)
Alfred Jolley
Max Greenberg
Kenneth Mize
Virgil Greenaway
Lawrence Hall
Neil Iovino (Spelled Piovino in Side's book)

Old Movie Trivia Tie-In #2:

There was a female spy for the allies in the Philippines who ran a nightclub that catered to Japanese officers. She was instrumental in gathering information to help with the raid, and ultimately was awarded the Medal of Freedom.

Her name was Claire "High Pockets" Phillips and her story was brought to the screen in 1951 as I Was an American Spy starring Ann Dvorak.

She was featured prominently in the book Ghost Soldiers upon which The Great Raid is based. However, I do not see a casting credit in IMDb for her character, so this may be only a tangential movie trivia tie-in.

Her story is briefly summarized here.
