“A very fearful time...”

This lady recounting the losses of her family...and her mother visiting
and consoling other mothers of lost soldiers/sailors in the the neighborhood...
...this lady may just be the “Shelby Foote” of this series.

“White Christmas”

OK, Ken Burns, put the dagger in my heart.
The documentary is showing plenty of images of our soldiers/sailors
celebrating Christmas on the other side of the world.

IIRC, Larry King would occassionally play the Frank Sinatra version of
the song. Pure tear-jerker.

One interviewee just said our men joined the service not out of patriotism but because they were bored and needed excitement

My heart sank when I heard them say that ! So this show is just going to be outright revisionist history, it seems. How disappointing. One thing they forgot though, that a lot of people are still alive whose parents fought in WW2, or lived through it at home. And we know better.

My Dad volunteered immediately after Pearl HArbor, to defend his country, not for excitment. He already lived in Hollywood, for Christ's sake. And my father in law, too. He lived in NYC.

This was outright lie # 2, the first being that the NAzis were against the German socialists, and the Jews. The Nazis were socialists.

I don't think I can watch any more.I'm sick at heart.

Nice portion on about the USMC Raiders...including the grafting of
different sectors of Americans into one fighting unit.
(from the story of Bill Lansford, of Boyle Heights in Los Angeles).

IIRC, I saw a WWII-era movie about the raiders.
When potential raiders were being interviewed, the reviewer asked
one Marine why he wanted to volunteer for Raider duty.
“To KILL JAPS, SIR!!!!!”

Probably true, but you probably couldn’t have that in a re-make today!

Don’t forget to download the viewers guide from PBS’s website (link on previous page).

Hang in there.
It IS TOO BAD Burns and Co. didn't try to make this documentary
about 20 years ago.
When more of the actual participants could be interviewed.
And maybe someone like Stephen Ambrose could have said
"For Criss-sake Ken, don't put that panty-waist Bravo Sierra in
your master-work!!!"

We all know it, that's true; but that generation is almost gone, and ours will soon follow. This show is all the next few generations of high school kids and new immigrants are going to see.

I'm enjoying it.

My only complaint is a general one, that I think the old WWII documentary tradition of adding some kind of movie footage to illustrate each bit of narration, whether or not that footage is original to that battle, is getting a little dated.

Maybe the History Channel's Dogfights show has spoiled me, but old stock footage of things blowing up and planes falling from the sky shoehorned into a narrative doesn't add to the documentary film experience as it once did.

Do you think that's an oversight, or something he did on purpose ? Call me pessimistic, but I think it's the latter.

“He kept politics out of the documentry.“

Let me know how that goes. I do not believe it is possible for those on the left to think apolitically. They may think they can and believe they do, but their perspective is obtusely warped to port.

My FIL was a Marine fighting on Guadalcanal. I have some photos of him and some of his buddies. They were very skinny. All the trees around them were blown to hell. He told me they took NO prisoners.

That is true.
Although I've not got the academic creds to do it...
someone should think about putting out a
"Knowledgeable Person's Guide To Ken Burns' 'The War'" and point
out the counter-examples for some of the PC/PBS gospel that
was bound to get inserted in the narrative.

I'm just PRAYING Burns didn't call The Smithsonian for background
info on Hiroshima and Nagasaki!!!

But my cynical side says: "Don't be silly. You know that letting
The Smithsonian WRITE the script on Hiroshima/Nagasaki was a
non-negotiable part of Burns' contract with PBS!"

The film tonight was a brutal presentation of America’s first year in WWII.

It’s pretty graphic, so keep that in mind if you choose to watch it.

I want to thank you for posting this earlier. Not trusting PBS, I was still undecided whether or not to watch until I saw the same interview (or a similar one) with Burns later on. When he made the point that in WWII, America was unified, I knew I had to watch.

There have been times during this show when I’ve had tears running down my cheeks. For many, many reasons. But mainly because our children are victims of the moral relativism that has become so pervasive in our schools.

Without unity, we cannot succeed in keeping human beings free from tyranny.

OK, I’m hooked. It seems to be pretty balanced and it treats our soldiers in a very respectful manner. I almost cried when Norah Jones sang that little bit.

If there is any politics, I’m not seeing it. Sadly, what I am seeing is what’s wrong with this war. Dammit, President Bush, I WANT to buy war bonds. I want to support this war in a personal manner. And dammit, if you tell me one more time to support the war effort by “keeping the economy going”, there will be a divorce in this household! DH doesn’t “get” how buying shoes and yarn helps us beat the terrorists! ;)

I did too. And I now have a better understanding why my Dad would say that for two years they didn't expect to win this.
