“Nakas continued, “This means, for example, that we would be violating the letter and the intent of the bishops’ statement were we to invite Sen. Kerry to speak on abortion. However, we would not be violating the letter and the spirit of the bishops’ statement were we to permit the College Democrats to invite Sen. Kerry to speak on the environment or the Iraq war.””

Um. Wrong. They were told not to invite anyone who holds such positions (whether they speak on those positions or not).

I would like to invite Kerry’s mother and father to a retroactive abortion protest.

Good grief...someone came to their senses

This is where it stood at the end of August, which was basically crap, especially the part about Kerry's positions being in line with 'Rerum Novarum'.

Bill Jonas, the director of UCSPE,...

Arnone appealed the rejection to Jonas who asked for more details on why Kerry should be allowed to speak.

In a six-page analysis, Arnone highlighted that Kerry "expresses remarkable dedication to the doctrine and principles of Catholic social teaching established in Pope Leo XIII's 1891 encyclical 'Rerum Novarum'" through his work "advocating for affordable and accessible health care, fighting for the minimum wage reform, defending the environment and championing the needs of the poor and marginalized, emphasizing responsibility both domestically and internationally and strives to recognize and assuage the problems not only of United States citizens, but of humanity collectively."

Jonas said that he considered and thought about the policy and saw the University "moving down a path where we wouldn't have any politicians at all," because of the expansion of the campaign season. "I'm glad they pushed the envelope a little bit, and I think they went about it in a good way. I want to approach it with a common sense framework," he said.

The Bishops probably handed Jonas his hat.

I think a lot of Catholic spoke out about this. Too bad we couldn’t have done the same thing at Columbia.

My wife sent this guy an email denouncing his obstinate decision to invite Kerry to speak. His only response: “I’ll pray for you.”
