Representatives from the Latino Student Union attended last Wednesday's Student Senate meeting to solicit signatures for the group's petition to have a student newspaper columnist removed for what some perceived as a racist column.
Ashley Diaz, president of LSU, and Brittany Benton protested The Post's publishing of Chris Yonker's Sept. 7 column as well as his statements in the column. Their petition calls for either his resignation or firing from The Post. "Either way, he needs to be out," Benton said.
Minority Affairs Commissioner Tristan Walker called inciting derogatory comments, as Yonker was accused of, reprehensible, and said that while he supports free speech, The Post should have exercised restraint. "Free speech and decency are two different things," he said.
Walker said that he had been hearing a number of complaints from his constituency groups, all of which were offended by the column. He said that while he doesn't approve of Yonker's opinions, "the bigger problem was that the editorial staff let it through."
In an article in last Monday's Athens NEWS, Post Editor in Chief Matt Zapotosky said the paper did not intend to fire Yonker, and that critics are missing the point of his column, which was intended to be "humorous and not anti-immigrant."
At one point, the column, which addresses the issue of illegal immigration, refers to "this scum," a reference to undocumented Latin Americans who cross the border illegally, taking the jobs of hardworking Americans.
Some readers have taken the column to be blatantly racist, while others maintain Yonker was just parodying anti-immigrant racists
Someone is NOT clear on the concept.
Anything that doesn't hurt their feelings.
“Minority Affairs Commissioner Tristan Walker called inciting derogatory comments, as Yonker was accused of, reprehensible, and said that while he supports free speech, The Post should have exercised restraint.”
In other words, used only speech he agrees with.
‘”Free speech and decency are two different things,” he said.’
Somebody owes this guy some tuition money back. That makes absolutely no sense. He may as well have said “Toilet water and Chinese checkers are two different things.”
I am watching “Blazing Saddles” on CMT and they are killing the N word.
I recently bought the original Bad News Bears with Walter Mathau. Holy crap! The ethnic slurs that fly out of Tanners mouth are amazing. I’m surprised the PC Nazis haven’t had it edited out for eternity.
What did he say?
What did he say?
He called some criminals "scum."
Oh, so speaking the truth about illegals is now not allowed?
RIP: Free Speech and Free Press
Ironic isn’t it that there are so many Mexicans in Ohio, of all places, that this is even an issue. All I can say is STFU.
These guys bring their cultural garbage with them. That’s why we have to be a bit more selective ~

“I am watching Blazing Saddles on CMT and they are killing the N word.”
They do that on most every channel now, unfortunately. Even worse, some channels take out the flatulation noises in the campfire scene. If you haven’t seen the movie before, it makes no sense at all.
