Bush says Castro rule near end, urges 'free' polls in Cuba

US President George W. Bush, in a speech to the UN General Assembly here Tuesday, called for "free and competitive elections" in Cuba, saying the long rule of ailing President Fidel Castro "is nearing its end." "In Cuba, the long rule of a cruel dictator is nearing its end," he told world leaders gathered here, in a reference to Castro.

"The Cuban people are ready for their freedom," he added, stressing as the communist-rule island enters a period of transition, "The United Nations must insist on free speech, free assembly and ultimately free and competitive elections."

The United States and Cuba do not have full diplomatic relations. The United States has a trade embargo on Havana that it clamped 45 years ago.

I still think we need to just leave the UN and let it die. It will certainly die without us.

If we leave, we need to boot them out of NYC quick like and in a hurry. Let them take up shop in the Hague or some other libtard, America-hating location.

Amen to that. The United Nations has become the worlds most expensive toxic waste site. We would be a better country with it removed from our soil.

"In Cuba, the long rule of a cruel dictator is nearing its end,"

I'll bet that caused the vast majority of the UN delegates to squirm in their seats.

I knew the UN was evil when I was in third grade. Took a class trip over there, and this guy Doug E. Doug or whatever his name is spoke. I felt pretty sick towards the end of the visit there; some medical people were going to take me wherever in a wheelchair. Before they could take me anywhere though, the class was leaving and we all went home. I felt fine on the bus back to school.

Yes, the United Nations is indeed evil.

Sorry George W., but the United Nations in 2007 is ferociously opposed to “free speech, free assembly and ultimately free and competitive elections.”

Thanks for posting. I thought I was at the DU with some of the posts regarding the $30 billion for Africa.

Bush did not sell us out at the UN this AM, he gave us away to the lowest scum.

He outed the Clintons on give aways. I wonder how many days he would have Americans work just to pay taxes for the rest of the world just so a few “families” could sit back in their gaited homes complementing themselves on what a fine job they have done? I wonder if the Bushes will tell how much they are worth? We never hear that do we?

I’ll support anyone who gets us out of the UN.

It’s grammatically incorrect.

Should be ‘clamped on’.

Bush will get Jimmah Carter to go down to Cuba and set up free and fair elections. Mayor Daley of Chicago can instruct Carter on how it’s done.
