Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports finds that the issue of abortion is important to a strong majority of voters and that it is one of the handful of issues in a troubling election year for Republicans that could boost their chances to retain the White House.

The poll asked votes to list 10 top issues they're considering prior to the 2008 presidential elections.

Some 43 percent of those polled said abortion is a very important issue in relation to which political party's presidential candidate they may support. Another 23 percent said the issue is somewhat important.

Only 21 percent said abortion is not very important a smaller group of 11 percent said abortion is not at all important to their vote.

Rasmussen also looked at the top ten political issues and asked respondents which party they trusted more to handle the particular topic.

Voters chose the Democratic Party on all of the top issues except one and while most voters sided with the Democrats by double digit margins on most topics, they favored the Democrats on abortion by a slim three percentage point margin.

That made abortion the third best issue for Republicans heading into next year's elections.

Rasmussen conducted three national telephone surveys of 800 likely voters September 12-13 and September 17-20, 2007. The margin of sampling error for each survey is +/- 3.5 percentage points.

A typical GOP candidate gets a net 7 points for being pro-life vs. a pro-abortion Democrat. It is the single best net vote issue the GOP has.

Sadly, the heads of the GOP don’t care.

So if it is an all pro abort slate in 2008, I will vote for my dog.
