“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing that is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept free by the exertions of other men better than himself.”

— John Stuart Mill —?

This would have been an excellent post in that thread of the lesbian jew supporting the pres of iran and not the US yesterday.

True, and both parties share the blame.... BUT, this is one of those issues where the Demagoguery of the left drives the whole non-debate off a cliff, because anyone who dares to stick his head up and try to deal with (as Pres. Bush did) gets so smeared, beaten up, and driven off the stage that we end up more stuck in our ways than ever. For THAT we can blame primarily the vicious Demagogues, IMHO.

A new plague would resolve all the issues.

Yup, but first the politicians have to find themselves a vaccine.

The Bush administration said in a new report yesterday that Social Security is facing a $13.6 trillion shortfall in coming years and that delaying reforms is not fair to younger workers.

Jorge, my boy, it is difficult for you to have credibility on this issue when you favored amnesty. Amnesty will wreck Social Security beyond reclamation as well as most of the programs in the social welfare state.

Some people might suggest that you are naive to think government will not take an interest in all the Roth IRA 401k money laying around at that point.
At the very least.

Put 60 millions illegals in the system and watch that figure jump to about $27 trillion.

There are millions who collect SSI who are not citizens, never put a dime in the system.

by me are two 15 story and a 9 story senior citizen bldg.
There are a number of Russian seniors in the bldgs.
Good rate with the rent, (medi CAl) Free medical and collect SSI.

There are also other ethnic groups who bring their parents
or grandparents over and they collect SSI.

In my city alone, thousands of people other than American
and never worked in the U.S., never paid taxed receiving
SSI

Many other large cities also the same story.

I think Congressional Democrats should bring Norman Shu (or however you spell his name) before a sub-committee and ask him how to extend the Ponzi Scheme that is Social Security. That’s what they’ve been promoting for all these years.

Ask Bubba what he did with the surplus from the peace dividend back in the 1990’s... Why didn’t he take on the reform of Social Security and Medicare when it was more “affordable”? Oh, just one of those cans kicked down the road for the next guy... The Bridge to the 21st Century! Build on that Bubba Foundation: the cans kicked down the road!

It is downright frightening how incredibly stupid most people are when it comes to SS. They have been conditioned to believe that privatization is a dirty word, and don't realize that with regard to SS it is a euphemism for the concept of personal choice and control of one's own financial future, which is bad news for the government. Can't have people being self reliant, otherwise we (elected officials)become irrelevant.

When I explain to people that I wish I could opt out of SS, and invest that 6.2% that comes out of my paycheck every 2 weeks, they look at me like I am insane.
"but, but if people had a choice, they might not save their money...the stock market is too risky...the government will take care of your money better than you can..."
Bull$hit! I will continue to do what I have been doing; living below my means, and socking away at least 15% (more like 20% over the past 5 years) of my money for retirement so I won't have to depend on big daddy government to take care of me. As pointed out earlier, SS is nothing but a Ponzi scheme.

You may or may not recall that Bush put a committee together as one of his first acts as President. This task force was headed up by Daniel Patrick Moynihan to start promoting the challenges and necessities associated with the reforming of Social Security. Townhall style meetings were held around the country — virtually no other Demo participation. Unfortunately, 9/11 came along and that program got diverted and de-emphasized. But W ran on reforming social security again in 2004 — and that was one of his first initiatives entering his second term. But the Dems wouldn’t even allow committee hearings to go forward.

Don’t tell me the Republican leadership didn’t try to fix it — they went further than the Dems EVER did. But the Dems refused to even allow it to come up for discussion. All demagoguery (sp?). You know what that means, right?

“The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.” (quote from HL Mencken). I think that pretty much describes Hillary, Nancy, Dingy Harry, Ted “The Submariner” Kennedy and all the rest.

You know, every time Ted Kennedy wanted to raise the minimum wage it seems he put in a bill and a week later it was voted on.

Don’t confuse work with effort. We had the majority of the house, senate and white house and NOTHING was done.

Facts are facts.

There was an excellent book written about 10 years ago called the Graying of America. The gov has over 70 trillion in un-funded mandated laws and costs in our future.

the republicans failed at fixing it and failed us too.

We can only thank the Democrats that refused to work out a solution with the Republicans when Bush ask them to work together. But their partisan politics as usual got in the way.

That's right. And they're still using partisan politics. Most idiots believe that their money is being held for them somewhere. Even more idiots believe that their money was held somewhere for a time but then it was blown by the government. The truth is that your money is used as soon as they get it to fund current retirees. It's always been that way. So it's more like a chain letter than a retirement program. As such it cannot succeed.

A quick use of the calculator would show that we'd be better off stuffing our money in jars than participating in SS. But the Democrats and their herd of idiots don't want to talk about that. All they want to do is bitch about the supposed motives of the opposition.
