I was a Mormon missionary in Memphis in the late '80s. There were definitely some scary parts of town where you just did not go.

One really funny thing was that our apartment got broken into at some point, but nothing was stolen. Apparently, the would-be burglars didn't know how little Mormon missionaries have in the way of possessions. I guess they didn't want to steal any copies of The Book of Mormon. LOL!

There were definitely some scary parts of town where you just did not go.I think it's probably worse now because the gangs are not limited to any one area, though some are worse than others, like Hickory Hill, aka "Hickory Hood".
