Conservatives head to White House for shutdown discussion
Conservative House Republicans head to the White House Thursday afternoon to huddle with President Bush for a discussion about the potential spending fight with congressional Democrats.
Republican Study Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling of Texas and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the ranking Republican on the Budget committee, join GOP Reps. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, John Campbell of California, Mike Pence of Indiana and Tom Price of Georgia for a session with the president.
One hundred forty-seven Republican lawmakers have already signed a pledge to sustain Bush's veto of any congressional spending measure that exceeds his initial budget request. And these were some of the same folks who were chattering about the potential for a government shutdown if majority Democrats overshoot the president's spending targets.
But don't expect these guys to come out with guns a-blazin' Thursday. After all, White House counselor Ed Gillespie warned House Republicans over the summer to temper their rhetoric about the impending fight over federal spending. Most lawmakers have been mum about the prospects ever since.
The House approved legislation Wednesday to fund the government through mid-November, putting lawmakers officially on the clock for a showdown over the budget.
Developing ...
Just as long as you keep in mind, Mr. Gillespie...
A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.

Well, 147 representatives is either barely enough or not quite there, depending on absences and abstentions..
At this point, I’d almost prefer that they shut down the gov’t for a few years. I just think a lot more would get done. At the very least, Congress wouldn’t be able to do any more damage.
My, there hasn't been anyone like that there in a long time...
No doubt. Keeps their grubby little hands out of our wallets anyway.
Hey Sub, remember last year when our state shut down the state gov? No one noticed?
Heck, I didn't know there were any conservatives left in Washington, the way things've been going....
***prefer that they shut down the govt***
Sounds great.
POTUS probably wouldn’t even feel any heat, (as long as seniors keep getting SS checks.)
;^)
Yep...no one noticed at all. I wish it happened more often.
A conservative in the White House? Hasn’t been one there since Reagan. This is news.
Not to mention the fact that it saves a ton of $$$. Not that that savings would be passed on to the taxpayers.
Ironically, it was Mr. Paine's lack of moderation in espousing his principles which led to his dying as a pariah.
It's a lesson that a lot of folks (e.g., Tom Tancredo) never learn : you can hold to your principles as tightly as you want, but if you're going to tell people about them, you have to go their speed, not your own. And you should never spit when you talk about them.
That’s what I was thinking: Mr Gilespie is trying to block conservatism just like the rest-forget about “temporing” Rhetoric- THat’s what Politics is..
The only thing “off-limits” in politics, IMO is personal attacks, other than that-Go at it (especially when focused on issues, and POLICY).
Shutting it down right before Christmas so we can hear the sad sacks of the drivebys telling us how little Johnny won't get his new X-box for Christmas, all because EEEEEEEEVIL Republicans want to start starving them during the holiday season, and to finally do the job that only Harod the Great could do.....kill all American Children and have Santa stand over their graves!!
Let the government shut down because when the ghetto crumbs stop getting their crack money the rats will cave.
